Mission:  The mission of Immanuel Christian School is to prepare students to meet the challenge of the world and culture they live in as young and growing Christians.  Thus, students are taught the skill of discernment in the light of God’s Word, the practice of stewardship for creation, the required commitment to a life of Christian service, and the beauty of witness through modeling God’s love in a broken world.

From the Principal's Desk::

Well, the final week before school lets out for the holidays is upon us!  There are several special events happening this week (as well as the weeks right after Christmas) which I'll highlight here:

Christmas Program - Mon at 1:30 pm and Weds at 7 pm.  Parents of JK children, please note the special times for these events. Classes will still run on Tue and Thu, but Mrs Groeneweg will have a calmer pace those days... This year’s program is called “Greetings From The Heart”.  Come for a time of spoken word, drama, song and instrumentals as we hear the Christmas story being told through the eyes of children.  May we celebrate the birth of our Saviour and enjoy a time of bringing Glory to God.  Refreshments will be served after the program.

Hot Dog lunch - Weds 19 Dec, orders due Dec. 17. Please see the order form.

School Carolling - we will be going out into our community from 1 - 3 pm on Thu 20 Dec.  Grades 5 -8 will carol along main street, and have hot chocolate at the Perc, while the primary wing will carol at Heritage Place and return to ICS.  We could use one or two parent volunteers for each classroom - please drop a note to your child's teacher if able!

School Skate - we will finish the week with a skate at the East Elgin Community Centre at 1:45 pm -2:45.  SK through grade 2 must wear helmets, all should wear gloves.  Students may dress in Christmas colours, if they like.  Skates may be rented at the rink for $2 if needed.  Parents are welcome to accompany their JK children to skating if they wish.

New Parent Information Evening - talk us up with friends and family!  Our annual registration event is the evening of Fri 18 Jan!

Parent Education Night - as parents, keep on top of what your children are doing. Mark your calendars for the evening of Wed Jan 23.   This year's focus is on some of the technology being used for literacy and communication.  Choose a workshop on Accelerating Parents (use of the Accelerated Reader program) or An Evening at the Docs (use of Google Docs).

We want our special events to be a celebration of the season, and of the gift of Christian education we have here at ICS.  May we, with Mary, treasure up the events of the Christmas holiday, and ponder the meaning of Christ's birth in our hearts.

in Christ,
//Keith Cameron//

Sleep in heavenly peace!

Douce nuit, sainte nuit !
Dans les cieux ! L'astre luit.

Cet enfant sur la paille endormi,
C'est l'amour infini !

Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht!
Gottes Sohn, o wie lacht
Liebe aus deinem göttlichen Mund,
Da uns schlägt die rettende Stund.

From the Principal's Desk::

Today at chapel, we celebrated the first week of Advent!  Students are now busy memorizing lines and songs for our Christmas program, and decorations are in our halls.  We look forward to celebrating Jesus' birth as a school.

In line with our term 2 theme of 'living in community', we want to emphasize several routine things we do as part of that call.  We are collecting mittens and hats for distribution by the Optimist Club, and non-perishable goods for the Aylmer Corner Cupboard food bank.  The collection points are the trees in our front entry.  As a school, let's think generously about others in our community.  This is a great teaching opportunity!  I would encourage you to involve your children in selecting items, shopping for them and bringing them in.  As well as canned goods, diapers are often in short supply at the Corner Cupboard.  Any items which you would enjoy (except for peanuts) are welcome!  We have until 19 December, let's show our care for those around us in need.

in Christ,
//Keith Cameron//

Praying for our Families:  Last week Thursday we prayed for Darrell & Helen Klassen, and Rob & Alice Kraan.
Praying for our Staff:  This week we will pray for Mrs. Drop and continued healing for Mr. TenBruggencate.

Update on Mr T:  Mr TenBruggencate joined the boys at their last game before the tournament, even refereeing for a short while. His mobility is greatly improved, though the pain remains strong. Keep him in your prayers for healing and patience.  He may return to very part-time work (a period or two daily) in end-Jan, perhaps moving to 50% after a month or so, and full-time teaching perhaps after the March Break timeframe.  We remain thankful for Ms Jones who continues to teach our gr 7/8 class.

Attached to this Journal is the new updated Bus Transportation calling list.  With the recent route changes with Mr. Vannoord and Mrs. de Dreu a change was necessary.  Also a few numbers have been changed.

Reminders:  Samko Toy Sale Fundraiser:  Please send your receipts to school by Thurs., Dec. 20th, so we can claim our refund.

                      Tea Towels:  Are you willing to donate a new or used (but in good condition) tea towel to re-stock our kitchen supply?

T.R.I.P Orders are due tomorrow Thurs., Dec. 6, pick up on Thurs., Dec. 13 in the afternoon.  Full or partial payments for big orders are most appreciated because this program runs a ‘very tight ship’ financially and we need the necessary funds to purchase gift cards.  Faxes orders are welcome!  Please mail in or drop off cheque at school as soon as possible.  Thank you.  Grace & Theresa

"SILENT NIGHT" PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITY:
Local Christian artist Derrick Drover would like to extend the invitation to ICS students to sing with him.
Tucked away in the beautiful village of Richmond (about 12 minutes from Aylmer - toward Tillsonburg) is a long standing, yet cozy stone church.  The "Richmond United Church", (53895 Church St.).  The circular interior boasts incredible architecture, and sound acoustics and the perfect place, for a concert.
He would like to end his Christmas concert on Friday Dec 14 @7:00 p.m. with the students singing "Silent Night" as they have learned it already (4 languages).  Please call Derrick at 519-765-4990 to sign up and receive further instruction, or you may sign by returning the “participation form” at the end of the Journal.  Please hand your form in to the school office.  Derrick needs to know how many students will be participating to be able to make this happen.
Come sing together, and hear some of your favourites along with new inspirational music for the season.  A night for the whole family!

Christmas Program:  You are all invited to attend our upcoming Christmas program on Monday, December 17th at 1:30 for an afternoon matinee or our evening performance on Wednesday, December 19th beginning at 7:00.

Our Service Projects for this Christmas Season together with all the schools in town:
Food Drive for the Corner Cupboard:  Our tree is ready for non-perishable food items for the Corner Cupboard to help needy families at Christmas time.  So pick up a few extra items with your weekly groceries and send them to school with your child(ren).  Let’s see how big an amount of groceries we can put under the tree.

Our Hat / Scarf / Mitten / Socks tree for the Optimist Club is looking rather cold and bare.  You may bring in new hats, mittens, scarfs or socks to put on and under the tree. The Optimist Club works together with the Corner Cupboard.  Both organizations appreciate our school being involved in these projects. Thank you!

Upcoming in January:  The Auxiliary is looking for willing volunteers to do “a good old fashioned kitchen cleaning”.  We are looking to do this after Christmas, in January, when all the busyness of the season is over.  Men are welcome to join the women (especially to move the stove and fridge).  Hopefully many willing workers can come out to get the job done quickly.  If you have a difficult time getting your required volunteers hours in this is a great opportunity.  A date will be set in early January we will keep you informed.

Congratulations to our volleyball players!  The Bluewater Tournament last Friday saw our girls place first in the small schools category, while the boys played in the consolation round for third place.  We were pleased with the increased number of participating schools, and the balanced competition, all building Christian community through sport.  We would hope to do a friendly players and coaches boys vs. girls exhibition game this Friday at lunch (12:50)...

Boys basketball assistant coach is sought!  Please speak to Mr Cameron.

From the Principal's Desk::

We have recently become increasingly concerned with some of our students' behaviour at recess, especially lunchtime.  In summary, the issue is a continued trend of rough playground behaviour across the gr 3-8 students (especially the boys), which results in raised tempers, fiery spirits, intentional physical needling and last week, one instance of punches thrown.  As a staff, we share a collective responsibility for all our students.  We discussed the following additional measures to steer all our students in the right direction:
  • we will all refresh students on the playground rules on respect for each other.
  • acceptable touch on the playground will be "two-finger" touch for tag (eliminates rough-housing).
  • we will continue to use the wall as a cooling down positional adjustment as needed.
  • we will temporarily make the basketball court and soccer field available on a rotating basis to one class at a time.
  • we will conduct a one week of a "surge" on playground supervision with 2 teachers on duty from 1:10-1:25.
As stated in our playground rules, students are to treat each other respectfully. We avoid rough play and play fighting. Although these things often start out as fun, people get hurt and bigger problems develop. Similarly, tackling in games is not allowed. This prevents escalating problems. For our students, we remind them that, "You always have a choice in how you react to any situation. Remember your responsibility to not be a participant in poor behaviour or a bystander.  Be an Alongside-Stander."  At ICS, we take our responsibility to provide a safe environment for all students seriously. Perhaps Dr Seuss says it best in The Cat in the Hat: "It's fun to have fun, but you have to know how."  We aim to teach the "how," which keeps it fun!

in Christ,
//Keith Cameron//

Bremer.  There will not be a Friday Family Fun Night in December, so the next one in January will be an exciting event!  Read on….

Baked Goods:  A HUGE thank-you to all families who donated baked goods for the Sweets, Treats and Treasures Sale on Sat Nov 17th!  The sale raises funds for the Ladies Auxiliary, which funds many of our school special events (theatre trips, for example)!

Student fund: update on $ raised from chocolates...  A profit of approx $2,500 was raised this year, an increase of about $1,000 more than last year.  The student fund covers field trips, sports meets, electives and other special events.  We will be able to increase the field trip allotment this year - well done!

Newspapers:  If you have bundled newspaper ready for recycling please drop them off at Martin’s Lift Truck (old location, 48180 Talbot Line, west on Hwy 3, north side of the road just outside of Aylmer). There is a shed there for newspapers as well as a bin on the north side of the building for pop cans.  People have been dropping off big bundles at the school so we would appreciate it if you brought them there directly.  Thanks for being a part of this fundraising.

Christmas Program:  You are all invited to attend our upcoming Christmas program on Monday, December 17th at 1:30 for an         afternoon matinee or our evening performance on Wednesday, December 19th beginning at 7:00.

Our Service Projects for this Christmas Season:
Food Drive for the Corner Cupboard:  It’s the time of year again to drop off items on non-perishable food under the decorated Christmas tree in the front hall.  These items will be picked up by the Corner Cupboard and will be distributed to needy families at Christmas time.  So pick up a few extra items with your weekly groceries and send them to school with your child(ren).  Your contribution to the food drive is most appreciated by the Corner Cupboard here in Aylmer

Hat/Mittens/Socks for the Optimist Club:  Once again, a tree will be in the front lobby for us to bless the less fortunate in our community.  You may bring in new hats, mittens, or socks to put under the tree. The Optimist Club works together with the Corner Cupboard and appreciates our school being involved in this project as well. Thank you!

Volleyball:  This year, in the interests of better competition, the volleyball tournament has been expanded to include schools as far west as Windsor and Sarnia - we are calling it the Bluewater Volleyball Tournament.  This means that we compete in the small schools pool, against Sarnia, Wyoming, Wallaceburg, Stratford and St Thomas.  Players need to bring a snack and lunch.  Coaches will facilitate rides.
Our boys play at LDCSS (24 Braesyde Ave, London), starting at 8:30 (be there for 8, please!).  Drivers are Mrs Versteegen-Buis and Mr Cameron.
Our girls play at LCES (202 Clarke Rd, London) starting at 9:20 (be there for 8:50, please!).  Drivers will be confirmed with the team.
Finals for both are at 3:30.

Library News
1. Earlier this week, students received notes regarding books that are overdue or coming due tomorrow.  Please help them check due
    date slips and return items they have finished.
2. A Berenstain Bears book about Missing Watermelon Money appeared in the library last week.  I'd be happy to add it to our
    collection, but if it sounds like it belongs to your family it can be returned. Just let the school office or library know.
3. Elgin County Library has given us a set of library cards to use for online researches in the computer lab and library.  If you have not
    already sent in your card number, you do not need to do so. HOWEVER, these cards may only be used at school, so
    students/families should still have a public library card allowing them access to the resources we are learning about in class.

FROM THE CLASSROOMS:
Memory work:  We are moving on to the Dutch version of Silent Night.  We recognize that learning another language, especially by rote, may be challenging.  However, as part of our call to love our (global) neighbours, we are called to try and identify with them. Learning some language is helpful in that regard.  As well, the languages chosen speak to some of our roots as Canadians, and as immigrants.
Stille nacht, Heilige nacht,
Heil en vree wordt gebracht.
Aan een wereld, verloren in schuld,
God's belofte wordt heerlijk vervuld.
Amen, Gode zij d'eer,
Amen, Gode zij d'eer.

Student of the Week:  This week’s Student of the Week is Micah Schuurman.  Next week:  Braden Vandersleen.
We all enjoyed our trip to the theatre last week!  Below, are some excerpts taken from Student Journals in Grades 3 and 4.
  • Today we went to the play.  It was The Elves and the Shoemaker.  It is a Brothers Grimm fairytale.  We saw the play in London at a theatre downtown. (Kaylynn)
  • I liked when they turned off the lights in the theatre!  (Randall)
  • I liked the part where the elves were working on the shoes.  (Megan)
  • I thought the set was cool where the shoes were hanging (Hayden)
  • My favourite characters were the elves.  (Braden)
  • The shoemaker was my favourite character because of his accent.  (Lucas)
  • It was about a couple that was poor. The shop was going to close down, but the elves came and taught the shoemaker. Then lots of customers came.  It was a pretty good play!  (Cody)
  • There were only 3 actors!  The play was changed to be a bit more modern.  At first the shoemaker didn’t have any customers. Then a girl came in and ordered some red boots.  (Holly)
  • My favourite part was when the elves made the big red boots.  (Ben)
  • I liked the part when the girl customer said, “Do you take debit?”  And the shoemaker said, “Are you asking if I’m in debt?”  (Jocelyn)
  • We learned that there are two or more kinds of puppets.  There are mouth puppets and there are body puppets. (Haley)
  • Have fun finding the Shoemaker’s Shop on Google Maps!  (Micah)
  • It was cool! (Daniel)
  • I liked the Christmas tree! (Seth)
