From the Principal's Desk::

Wow!  While your children were enjoying their 4 day weekend, your teachers were also enjoying the annual Edifide convention.  It was of exceptional high quality, speaking to the strength of the wider Ontario Alliance of Christian Schools system - we have very talented teachers and leaders, and it was great to learn from and with them in a wide variety of workshops.  There was also the comraderie and encouragement of joining together in worship, and the intellectual stimulation of the keynote speakers.  We were challenged to think deeply on the habits we are inculcating in our students (do they all point consistently towards Christ?), and encouraged to retain our passion and enthusiasm for teaching throughout our careers (re-working our materials, learning ourselves, ensuring we are connected in community).

Many of our staff attended a workshop on 'through-lines.' Through-lines seek to be a means of unifying what we teach, while focusing on a particular aspect of our cultural mandate.  We commonly say that the Christian school declares that every square inch of creation belongs to God, and these through-lines help to link it all together.  We'll be emphasizing the through-line of 'building community' over term 2, and we'll look at our responsibilities as 'earth-keepers' in term 3.  We'll lay out what that looks like over the next several weeks.

in His service,
//Keith Cameron//
Principal

Prayer:  Our Christian sympathy is extend to the Broer family in the passing away of Minke Jongsma last night.  She was the
               grandmother of Marcel and Amy Broer, great grandmother of Haley and Jaden.  May the God of comfort be with the
               families as they deal with the loss of a loved one.

                Let us also remember in prayer Lance Buis’ mother, Irene.  She is leaving for a missions trip to New Orleans, Nov. 1-10th,
with 13 others.  They will be going to Nola, the poorest part of the country and the hardest hit by Katrina doing lots of repair/ rebuilding work.  Please pray for safety for the group and God’s blessing on the work they hope to accomplish.

Gr 5-8 Remembrance Field Trip:  The grades 5/6 and 7/8 classes will be researching the WWII servicemen who died on active duty at the Aylmer Air Training Centre (now the police college).  We will visit the gravesites at the Aylmer Cemetery at 11 am on Thu Nov 8, along with a Legion member, and will pause to reflect on the sacrifices made and the cost of defending our country throughout our history.  Please sign and return the permission form at the end of the Journal by Tue Nov 6.

Remembrance Day:  as Nov 11th falls on a Sunday this year we will not be able to attend the Aylmer ceremonies as a school.  We would like to lay a wreath, still.  Is there a family in our community whose service is at a time other than 11 am (the time of the town ceremony), and who would be willing to lay a wreath on our behalf?  Please speak to Mrs Smit or Mr Cameron.

Poppies:  We will be distributing poppies on Wed., Nov. 7th to all the class.  Please send along a small donation to the poppy fund to support our veterans.  Thanks.

Reminders:  Chocolate Letters:  orders are due tomorrow, Thursday, Nov.1stThe pick up day is changed to Friday, Nov. 16th from 1:30 – 3:30.  See the last 2 Journals for an order form.

 From one pumpkin to another!

From one pumpkin to another!
A woman was asked by a co-worker,
'What is it like to be a Christian?'
The co-worker replied, 'It is like being a pumpkin.'
God picks you from the patch, brings you in,
and washes all the dirt off of you.
Then He cuts off the top and scoops out all the yucky stuff.
He removes the seeds of doubt, hate, and greed.
Then He carves you a new smiling face and puts
His light inside of you to shine for all the world to see.'

From the Principal's Desk:

We completed our second round of parent-teacher interviews on Mon night. These are important times to connect with your child's teacher(s) and share in their day-to-day accomplishments and areas for development.  It was a pleasure to be a 'parent' with Amanda as we connected with three of our children's teachers.  I noticed that the parent-teacher interview is a different view than that afforded me as principal.  I see a snapshot of a class when I walk in, I see (and sometimes join) the current lesson, I see the classroom management, and I see how the children are doing at that moment.  The parent-teacher interview is more of a long-term look - what has my child been doing, what have they been learning?  It's a time to celebrate the value of the daily classroom instruction.  Well done to the teachers!

Keeping our teachers sharp, we have our annual educators' convention tomorrow and Friday.  Our local chapter of Edifide (the teachers' association) and our teachers are involved in the planning and running of the convention.  Departing really early on Thursday, we are running the registration desk in Ancaster starting at 7:30 AM!  This year's theme is "beyond the walls," being concerned about how our faith matters inside of and beyond the walls of our school.  There are many excellent speakers and workshops lined up - more to follow next week.  Your childrens' long weekend allows your teachers to keep their own skills current and sharp.

in Christ,
//Keith Cameron//

Praying For Our Families:   Last week Thursday we prayed Jim & Helen Friesen, John & Suzie Guenther
Praying For Our Staff:  This week we will pray for Mrs. Robinson and for continued healing for Mr. TenBruggencate

School gym t-shirts: Our vibrant design has been well-received in school, and at external sports competitions!  These will be mandatory for gym class for grades 1 through 8 starting Nov 1.  Especially in the senior grades, students not wearing an ICS shirt will be offered a loan of a (clean) older design grey ICS shirt for that days' gym class.  Please ensure your child has their shirt - we have another order in, for sale in the office at $15.

New Instruments for our Band:  We received a donation of 10 new instruments for our band program from Judy Lampman, former principal of Brantford Christian Academy.  Sadly, the school had to close last year, just after beginning their band program.  They felt God wanted them to bless another school with these new instruments.  After seeing our ad for a band conductor they approached us to see if we wanted extra instruments.  We are very thankful and blessed by this generous donation.

from the ICS Library...
1. We are now well into our library routines with library visits and returns.  As soon as our updated library program makes them available, weekly date due slips will be sent home as reminders for books still checked out.  For now, please check the date due slip in the book pocket and return or renew items on time.
2. Part of our library reminders at the beginning of the year includes using a plastic bag to protect books in the backpack and finding a safe place, away from younger siblings and pets, to keep books at home.  This year already we have had a number of damaged books.  Bills for replacement are sent out for these items (but we prefer to keep the original in good condition!).
3. PLASTIC BAGS are popular in the library.  If you have a collection to donate, please send them in!
4. BATTLE OF THE BOOKS titles were released next week.  If your child in Grade 4-8 is a good reader, encourage him/her to be part of this school team.  It involves reading and writing questions for the 10 selected books before February and participating in recess/noon hour practises. This year's Battle will be held in Strathroy, in April.  More information will be distributed in class.
5. Your PUBLIC LIBRARY CARD enables you to use a wide number of resources that are out of the reach of our school budget.  If you have an ELGIN COUNTY or OXFORD COUNTY library card you can access a number of World Book references, Encyclopedia Britannica, Canada in Context (a magazine database especially useful for highschool students) and a wide range of other online references.  It's worth a stop at a local library branch, and it's FREE!  Students in Grades 5-8 will be looking at some of these online resources in November.  Please help by sending their (or your) library card number (and PIN if you have it) to school so we have a record for reference.

FROM THE CLASSROOMS:
Protectors: Our final chapel in our Protectors Freedom from Bullying program was this morning.  The program seeks to empower potential Targets with strategies to avoid being victimized, to clearly identify bullying as un-Christian and unacceptable, and to empower Bystanders to become Alongside Standers.  We focussed on the Protectors Courage and Character Commitment:
I will become an Alongside Stander
I will report acts of bullying
I will treat people who are different than me the way I want to be treated
I will be friendly to people who are new
I will be helpful to people who are different, including physically and mentally challenged students
If someone sends me embarrassing messages or photos, I will not pass them on
If I hear about a student threatening violence, I will tell a teacher, principal or parent right away

Our Protectors Pledge may be seen on the wall outside the gym, reflecting each school 'family':
We believe that everyone is equal and created in the image of God, giving us amazing dignity, value and worth.  So when we see bullying, we pledge to be an Alongside Stander and help the Target with strong and courageous words and deeds, helping us to become stronger and more loving people now and in the future. Such loving courage will make Immanuel Christian School a safer place to learn, grow in faith, and help us love God and others more. This is the greatest of all commandments.

Our school-wide Memory Work for Wed., Oct. 31st:  1John 4:7 “Let us love one another, for love comes from God.”
