From the Principal's Desk:

The last Journal of the year! We do celebrate our graduating class of 2013, and we wish God's blessing to: Lance, Jordan, Kristy, Sebastian, Charlotte, Alanna, Kassidy, Austin, Kennedy, Aaron and Cassie!  We look forward to our Graduation ceremony tomorrow night as our official opportunity to celebrate our students' achievements and continue to entrust them to God's care for high school and beyond.  Graduation involves community change too, as we also "graduate" some of our families whose youngest or only child is moving on the grade 9.  You are still encouraged to be involved in ICS, but it will be with a different perspective!  We "graduate": Larry and Irene Buis, Chris and Christy Hiemstra, Teus and Annemarie Korevaar, Jan and Aartje Noorland, and Graham and Janet Saarloos. 

The school year would not be as successful as it is without volunteer help, and at this time, I want to convey a sincere thank-you on behalf of all the Immanuel staff for your support in so many ways: service on the board or committees, helping with hot lunches, in the library, as a regular reading buddy, chaperoning field trips, acting as a handyman... and many more!  For parents, you will note encouragement elsewhere in the Journal to declare your involvement on your GIFTS form so we can return parental cheques.  Our school offers a unique opportunity for parents, grandparents and other supporters of Christian education to be actively involved in your child's education - truly, as educators we act alongside family and the church, not in our own right.  We cherish your continued support into next year too.

Reflecting back on our school theme, may we all continue to be encouraged to follow our call to love one another, knowing that our love indeed comes from God (1 John 4:7)!

Praying for our Students:  Tomorrow at staff devotions we will be praying for the grade 5/6 and 7/8 class.

Reminders:   GIFTS forms are due by June 30, if not submitted we will cash your deposit cheque.  Even if you 
were on a committee and received your 25 hours automatically we still need to have your paperwork sent in to 
the office asap.   
                         Band sign-up applications forms?  Please hand in before Friday.
                         Urgent:  someone to take on our pop can collection (pick-up, store and bring in to scrap dealer). 
                         Please call the office.

Transportation:  On Thursday, 20th & Friday, 21st Mrs. Tesselaar will leave 20 minutes later in the morning since there is no more high school.  Reminder:  students are dismissed at 12:50 on Friday.  Buses will be here to take the students home.   

Graduation: Thursday, 20 beginning at 8:00 p.m. in the Aylmer C.R.C. 
Ø      Babysitting will be available in the church nursery.
Ø      Refreshments will be served behind the school after the ceremony.  Please have only 1 serving of goodies to ensure there is enough for everyone.  Parents are asked to supervise their children in this matter.  Graduates, your refreshments will be set aside for you.
Ø      Grads and parents – reminder – grad photos start at 5:15; class picture at 5:50 and dinner at 6:00.
Ø      Graduation prelude begins at 7:45.  Those students who are involved should be ready to begin. 
Ø      All students are involved in our mass choir and are expected to attend.  Students in grades 1-7 will sit with their parents during the program.
Ø      Band: Please meet at the church by 7:30 to tune instruments.  Sunday attire is fine. 
        -  Please have your parents keep a spot for you as you will be sitting with them after we play at the beginning of the evening.
        -  At the end of the evening, please make sure that you return your instrument, binder and stand back to the school before
           getting your dessert.  (The church will be locked up after the receiving line is finished for the graduates.) 
Ø      Kindergarten students are asked to meet in classroom 1 of the church by 7:45 p.m.  They will sit with their families after their graduation, so please keep a seat for them.  Parents if you want to come earlier to have an ideal seating location then please keep your child with you and bring him/her to the room at 7:45. Thanks
Ø      Reserved seating will be available for parents and siblings of the grade 8 graduates in the centre section of the church.  We cannot include grandparents, so please encourage them to come early to get a good seat.  Ushers will be on hand to oversee the seating arrangements. 
Ø      Grade 8 students will be dismissed on Thursday at 12 noon.

The Cheese order attached to this journal is for September.  Orders can be dropped of at the school till Wednesday, June 26th with delivery on Wednesday, Sept. 4th.  If you had a standing order this year and would like it to continue, please fill out a form to indicate that.  You can still place your order up until Aug. 280th but you need to call or e-mail Keli-lyn Lockyer at 519-617-0779 or keli.lockyer@hotmail.com.  Thanks for supporting this fundraiser all year!
 
Awards Assembly:  This morning at our Awards Chapel, we were pleased to be able to recognize many of our students for their contributions towards sports teams, student service jobs, public speaking, the World Renew poster contest, as well as our grade 8 awards. The following grade 8s were given awards, and will be mentioned again at the Graduation ceremony:

Ontario School Nutrition Program:  We have submitted an application to be included in the province-wide nutrition program for 2013-2014 which partially funds nutritious school snacks.  We'd be considering running a snack program for students as a light breakfast following their early-morning bus ride.  A key need in implementing this would be one or two volunteers to plan the menu and coordinate shopping, with students being involved in minimal preparation and distribution in the morning.  If interested, please see Mr Cameron.

Playground and Summer Maintenance:  We are thankful for all our donors who were financially blessed to be able to contribute to our Spring Drive. The total amount was substantial at $64,400, but was below our target by about $12,600.  The Board has decided to fully fund the allocations towards our operating deficit and our education program improvements. Tonight the Board will consider options for a reduced playground and roof replacement option for this summer.  Both projects will be phased over 2 years as we seek other grant options as well.  As a step in addressing our liability issues, we envision removing and replacing the current 20 year old play structure with a slightly smaller one that fits a 2 - 12 year age range, and is fully compliant with CSA codes. We will need volunteers in late July or early August for both projects to come alongside our maintenance committee - please contact Marcel Broer (outgoing chair) regarding helping for the playground or Jim Vording (incoming chair) for the roof or for joining the committee in general. These are exciting projects, and we seek your enthusiastic help!

Yearbook:  We would like to thank our yearbook committee, Mrs. Amanda Cameron, Mrs. Angie Bergen, Mrs. Annette Dykxhoorn and Mrs Irene Versteegen-Buis for putting together another wonderful yearbook for each student to have and enjoy.  We are pleased to have such a special book of memories. 

Private Music Lessons:  Not every school is blessed with 5 experienced musicians interested in providing music lessons during the school day!  These teachers are not part of the ICS staff; we simply make a room available to them.  These teachers take students from their classrooms to have private lessons right at school.  If you would like to make arrangements for private lessons at school, contact the teacher at the following information.  Book now to guarantee a spot!

Summer Shopping School Supplies:
JK and SK
-  Resting towel or blanket – not bigger than 140 cm x 70 cm
-  Indoor “non-marking” footwear (no laces, please).  This footwear will be used in the gym so they should have non slipping shoes
-  Paint shirt – can be one of Dad’s old t-shirt or dress shirt with the sleeves cut shorter
For all students for GRADES 1 – 8
-  Indoor “non-marking” athletic shoes.   Parents please be reminded that when you purchase new footwear please make sure that they are:  -  White soles or non-scuffing black marking.  Shoes that leave a black mark will be sent home. 
                -  Pencil case (no pencil boxes, please)
                -  Individual pencil sharpeners that catch shavings (the plastic cylinder shape with metal sharpener inside works very well)
                -  Markers
                -  Pencil crayons (Laurentian seems to sharpen best without breaking)
                -  Pencils (HB works best)
                -  Glue stick
 -  PE clothes:  ICS Athletics t-shirt (on sale through the office) will be required for PE.  Gr. 1-8: dark coloured shorts  or track pants as well

Grades 1 – 4
-  A pack of 24 Crayola or Prang wax crayons
-  Markers (with fine tips for tracing and outlining), no ball point pens, please
-  Crayon erasers (white ones work well)
Grade 3/4
 - No binders please.  We will use duo tangs instead that will be provided by the school. 
Grades 5-8
- Only one 1” binder please.  The larger sizes take up too much space in the desks and so end up on the floor
- Calculator and math set.
-  2 glue sticks
-  blue or black ballpoint pens

The LAST HOORAH - FRIDAY FAMILY FUN NIGHT was another success!  Thank you to those of you who came out to enjoy fresh cut fries, burgers and hotdogs - as well as a game of road hockey and a visit with the goats, mama donkey and baby donkey!  $767.00 was raised which brings the FRIDAY FAMILY FUN NIGHT total profits for this year to:       $5376.85!
Thank you to June's road hockey convenors, the serving and clean up staff, and to Family Flowers for providing the mini farm attraction. 
A big thank you to everyone who attended one or all of the seven FUN NIGHTS - this last one showed some new faces and families too.  It has been a blessing to work with all the volunteers and especially to re-connect with school families and the Heritage Place residents.  Enjoy your summer break and we look forward to seeing you again next September!

From the Principal's Desk:

I should start with a story of the couple who dropped into the school on Monday afternoon. The wife's mother had recently passed away at Chateau Gardens Retirement Residence, and she came in search of a student of ours who had made and delivered an Easter card to her mother some months previous.  She wanted to express her and her mother's deep appreciation for the card!  We were able to link her up with Ms Marianne Pieters and her class so she could convey her thanks in person.  It is rare that we can see some of the results of a simple act of student service (in this case our grade 1/2 class' visits to Chateau Gardens), and we praise God that we could be a real encourager for at least one elderly lady! 

Much of my planning is now focussed on setting us up for next year. I am pleased to have several new enquires about our school - please keep these parents in your prayers as they decide on what is best for their children. In line with our board vision of a "Christian, innovative and exceptional" education, there are several "new" things envisioned for next year:
- as announced at the Spring membership meeting, Mrs Drop will be teaching grade 3/4 homeroom and Ms Buma will be teaching grade 5/6 homeroom.  In an effort to increase positive multi-age relationships and a school-wide team atmosphere, the grade 3/4 class will be located in Mrs Drop's current room, while the grade 5/6 class will likely move into what is currently our boardroom.  There will be some rotary as Mrs Drop will continue to teach senior French and Music.
- as part of educational program upgrades approved by the board, we have replaced our high jump mat with one meeting current standards, we have purchased Christian curricular supplements for our French program, we are planning on acquiring an iPad for our resource program, and we are considering an online hosted mathematics resource (Mathletics, accessible at home and at school). Seeking excellence, we need to keep our curriculum and resources current.
- our timetable for next year groups all math instruction together in the morning. That will ensure a math focus in our morning routines in all grades. That also allows families potentially interested in our homeschool partnership program to be part of the math classes, which are a core strength of our academic program. This is a little-used, but potentially valuable, option for homeschool families seeking to complement their own curriculum.
- our timetable for next year makes space for an integrated studies block on Friday afternoons. This allows for multi-age student groupings (our school families) to learn together, following units which bridge our curricular divisions. With age-appropriate project goals, this would allow cooperative learning, foster teamwork and allow for broader differentiation for individual abilities than normally possible, even in combined grades. In our initial efforts, we are following the lead of Beacon Christian School, who have shared their work with all OACS schools. We plan on a Fall and a Spring integrated unit to start, in addition to our current Electives program.

Our board vision is intended to spark excitement and communicate the calling to academic excellence that we feel is part of what makes ICS unique. I hope that you are excited by these ideas, and that you spread your excitement as you talk to friends and neighbours!

   Our Christian sympathy is extended to Fred & Carrie Rempel and their children Mariah (gr. 2), 
   Dylan (SK) Deserae and Brooklyn (at home) with the birth of a still born child last Tuesday.   May 
   the God of hope and comfort surround this family in this difficult time. Because we believe, we 
   know little “Faith Hope Rempel” is safe in the arms of Jesus.

Bus Route Cancellation:  This Friday, June 14.  Mr. Vannoord’s afternoon bus route.  Mr. Vannoord will be driving Mr. Walters bus route since Mr. Walters will be with the gr. 7/8 to Canada’s Wonderland.  Parents from Mr. Vannoord’s bus route are asked to pick up their child(ren) from school that afternoon.  Mrs. Grace Schipper will be driving Mrs. Walters bus route for the afternoon as well.

Advance note for Transportation:  The LDCSS Exam schedule will affect our bussing.  On the exam study day of Monday, June 17 Mrs. Tesselaar will leave 20 minutes later in the morning.

Accelerated Reader:  Grade 1-8 students who attained their reading goals will be treated to an ice cream sundae, complete with delicious toppings, on Tues., June 18!  Mrs. Groeneweg’s JK class does not do AR, and will celebrate their learning in other ways.  Congratulations!
Sundaes will be available to those who did not reach their goals for $2.00.

Parents, Grandparents and Seniors Friends are invited to attend our Chapel and Awards Assembly on Wed., June 19 at 8:55. 

The Board of Immanuel Christian School warmly invites all friends and supporters to attend our graduation ceremony for the senior kindergarten and grade 8 class of 2013 on Thursday, June 20 beginning at 8:00pm at the Aylmer Christian Reformed Church.  Babysitting will be available in the church nursery.  Refreshments will be served behind the school following the ceremony. Historically, parents and siblings are asked to consider helping out in several ways:
-          Parents and older siblings, can you help in running the nursery? Education Committee (Georgie Rodenburg) is coordinating
-          Musically talented students, can you share your gifts playing a prelude piece?  Ms Tine Buma is coordinating.
-          Grade 7 students are also needed for the gr 8 grad meal preps?  Tina Vyn and Suzie Guenther are coordinating.
-          We are looking for a few more volunteers, especially some of our senior retirees to come in on Thursday, (the 21st) at 8:30 a.m. to help hull and cut strawberries.  Please call the office 519-773-8476 or e-mail Immanuel@amtelecom.net or call Paddi if you can help @ 519-773-2158.

Band sign-up for 2013-2014:  Band applications were sent home with students currently in grades 4-7 on Tuesday.  If you would like your child to be a part of our school band please fill out the application form and return it to the office by next week Wednesday.  The fee is $150 per student if we supply the instrument for your child, and $75 if your child brings their own instrument. 

FRIDAY FAMILY FUN NIGHT - the LAST HOORAH! Friday, June 14 5-7:30pm:  It's the last Fun Night of the school season and it is going to be a blast!  Bring your road hockey sticks for a tournament and there will be a petting zoo (goats, sheep...) on site!  Dinner will be served in the ICS school yard from the fry wagon - Cheeseburgers, Jumbo dogs, Fresh Cut homemade Fries and dessert.  Cost is Adults $8 and Children (12 + under) $5 and all proceeds go directly back into the school! Delivery to Heritage Place and Takeout is also available. (in the event of rain - dinner will be enjoyed in the school gym)  See you there!

District Track and Field: Please find attached our student results from the District competition held last Wednesday. We are proud of all our student athletes! You may note that many students improved on their best distance and times at our local competition (the "seed times"), and there are many ribbons earned! The day was well-run, with staff from John Knox Christian School heading it up, and we thank God for great weather. With a change in provincial standards, the running of the high jump event was a particular focus, and it was conducted properly and safely. Again, we apologize for a serious error with the time of the 100m heats which led to several athletes missing their event. We will ensure that we review the student race times against the overall timetable as a check to avoid future errors. - Mr Cameron

A big Thank You to Jeff Vannoord, Ken Vandendool and Steve Vandersleen for cooking all the mcmuffins, burgers and dogs…they worked all day!!  Also a big, big Thank You to Theresa DeJong and Gracie Vording!! Those two ran the til the entire day long and did a marvelous job!! The Broers for donating their tent and generator, the Schuurmans and A & E Saarloos for donating all the eggs and the Loewens for the donation of apples.  M&M’s for giving us all the meat and buns at a huge discount.
Also to all the students who helped between events and the parents who popped in to help for shifts as well as the Auxiliary members who worked to set up, purchase, work all day and unpack:-)!!  It was all greatly appreciated!!  Our grand total is right near $1000.00!!!

Child Welfare Policy Update: Our Education Committee has recommended changes to our Child Welfare policy which would see an increased rigour on criminal record checks for regular volunteers (more than 3 times) and field trip chaperones. This step is seen as due diligence to protect our students. Record checks are valid for three years. These take some planning to get completed. The policy changes are not yet approved, but we would suggest that all parents who may be interested in volunteering with students next year consider obtaining a record check.  A template letter to begin the process at your local police detachment is attached.

Getty Committee Fundraising: With no further concerts planned in the short term, the Getty Committee recently transferred the remaining funds ($4500) raised in the Fall Getty Concert into the school operating fund. Thank-you to the Committee for their passion for Christian music and Christian education!

Ride for Refuge! This annual Christian charity bike ride will be held on Sat Oct 5.  ICS will again enter a team (riders grades 5 and up, or with parental accompaniment).  We are also registered as a charity recipient for funds raised (50% - 70% of total funds).  In the past 2 years, Ride for Refuge has raised money to sponsor our school Compassion child and augment our Tuition Assistance fund (over $4000 last year!).  It's not too early to register online and join the ICS team at: http://rideforrefuge.org/registration!  Mark your calendars!  More information to come in September 2013...

LDCSS is still looking for Christian families and single Christian adults who can provide an encouraging and supportive living environment for our international students from September 2013-June 2014.  In exchange for welcoming a student into your home, each host family will receive $800/month in compensation.  We need to complete the application process by the end of the school year, so please contact Mrs. Boer (cboer@ldcss.ca) as soon as possible if you want to learn more about our homestay program.

LCCSS is hosting it’s 3rd Annual Volleyball Camp from August 12-16, 2013 at the school for boys and girls currently in grades 5-8.  This week long camp will help develop camper's skill, understanding and love of volleyball.  This camp offers a great ratio of six campers to every instructor.  Fair play and effort will be emphasized.  The camp is run by the LDCSS coaches from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at a cost of $150/child.  (food/refreshments are not provided) Registration forms are available in the school office or go directly to www.ldcss.ca website and register. 

Athletes in Action Soccer Camp:  Do you like soccer?  Do you want to get better?  Athletes in Action Soccer Camp will be held again this year from July 15-19 behind the Saxonia Hall.  It is a week-long camp for 6-13 year olds, dedicated to developing basic soccer skills and spiritual growth.  Registration is open and the cost is $115 per child.  Volunteers are needed to help with coaching the kids during the week.  We are also in need of homes to billet the soccer coaches (one for two males and one for two females).  Please contact Sharon Schipper if you can help.

JUNIOR / SENIOR KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Groeneweg

Some of the things we have done in Kindergarten:

                Reviewing sight words: you, the, and
I asked the students their plans for the summer. They wrote down some ideas in their writing journals: swimming, camping,
watch t.v., play outside, biking, etc.
We have been playing some simple math games to practice counting and comparing. This has been a lot of fun and very competitive too 
Show and Tell: JK- Tuesday, June 18th, SK- Monday, June 17th
Last day of classes for SK is Wednesday, June 19th

GRADE 5 and 6 – Mrs Drop


Creative Writing:  Caleb Krahn's short story, entitled "The Quest for the Living Gem" has been chosen to be included in the top group of entries received in the Canadian Schools Creative Writing Contest.  The story will now go forward into the final competition to be judged in the fall of 2013.  Congratulations, Caleb!
P.E. Parent Volunteers needed for Tuesday, June 18th. Grades 5-8 will be playing Disc Golf at the park from 1:30 -3:00. Please contact Mrs. Drop or Ms. Jones if you can help out on that date. 
Spelling:  Test will be on Fri., June 14.  Please review the list of words that you received on Fri., May 31.  Twenty words will be chosen.
Math:  There will be a quiz on Lessons 6 - 12 in Fractions and Decimals on Fri., June 14.  The quiz will be similar to the second page of "Show What You Know" in the math textbooks. 
Science:  Ask about your child’s proposal for stewardship of the Hannah Property.  Group proposals will be presented in  clas on Tuesday, June 18.
