Mission:  The mission of Immanuel Christian School is to prepare students to meet the challenge of the world and culture they live in as young and growing Christians.  Thus, students are taught the skill of discernment in the light of God’s Word, the practice of stewardship for creation, the required commitment to a life of Christian service, and the beauty of witness through modeling God’s love in a broken world.

From the Principal's Desk:

As a staff, we are having fun with Fish Days on Friday afternoons, and we trust that your children are too! Our goals include teaching teamwork, creating a sense of wonder for a particular aspect of God's creation with a fishy thematic element, and allowing the students to articulate their ideas and questions. We used our staff meeting to "tune" our lessons together, and we are excited by the creativity, insight and engagement of the students. We will be creating a Fish Days gallery on the gym stage to display student work - give us a week, then come and see!

Our board met last week, and the excitement I feel in our education program was also present in our conversation around the table. We looked at some of the recent educational efforts by the Bill Gates Foundation, and saw how elements in our own program build student engagement and character, including our integrated studies, personalized learning programs in Accelerated Reader, Mathletics (and with Tell Me More French just getting started), Google Apps for education, and student service jobs. These augment the already solid academic core of our educational program. And while Bill Gates seeks to build towards individual success, we seek instead to develop of each student's unique gifts in service to God in all walks of life.

As we work to create excitement and depth to our learning, we need you to be excited and talking as well! Word of mouth is the most valuable advertising! We have space, and for sustainability, we need new families. God has provided a great gift in this school! There are those who care deeply about their Christian responsibility to bring up their children, but are not yet convinced by ICS... help convince them on the value of the investment!

in Christian education,
Keith Cameron, Principal

CEAF: Last night, along with area Christian schools, the board chair, vice-chair and principal met with the Ontario Alliance of Christian Schools executive director regarding the CEAF re-assessments. Even if we are disappointed by CRA’s actions, the OACS has been helpful in providing leadership and limiting the extent of the CRA reviews. We are blessed to be part of a wider organization, and we thank them for their efforts. With a need for professional expertise, and with a possible class action suit against CEAF and the OACS, legal efforts have been passed to a private legal firm. If you were a participant in the CEAF program, you should have received a copy of a retainer agreement from the firm Morris, Kepes and Winters. OACS recommends this firm if you wish to pursue legal redress along with other OACS parents, and the package explains initial costs ($491), potential benefits and risks. Many believe that there is a legal contest to be fought. Please prayerfully consider your decision on involvement. There is a deadline for responding by 30 Sep.  (The link to the law firm is http://www.mkwtaxlaw.com/ceaf/ )  We also encourage all our parents to participate in our school survey detailing the impact the CRA reassessments are having. Responses to date indicate that the reassessments are significant, but have not yet generated need for tuition assistance. We accept donations to ICS for tuition assistance (and can issue valid tax receipts for those), and the board will continue to use our confidential Tuition Assistance Committee to address needs brought to their attention. Please contact our Treasurer, Dave VanGurp for further details.

Board Discussions: Did you know that the Board minutes are posted at: http://www.immanuelchristianschool.net/boardminutes.htm. Minutes are approved at the next meeting, and are posted thereafter.

Praying for our Families:  Last week Thursday we prayed for Jake and Lydia Bergen &

The students were watching the chrysalis all morning while trying to do some school work for we knew the monarch butterfly was soon going to be born. Just before we were going to pray for lunch Owen announced that he saw the chrysalis starting to crack open. We all quickly gathered around the table to watch the miraculous birth of the Monarch Butterfly. It was so exciting to be able to watch the tiny wings grow and stretch out. The students were so filled with joy they went out to share the good news with anybody they could find in the school. We soon had many visitors coming in our classroom to see the beautiful monarch butterfly. On Monday morning we tagged the two butterflies before we let them go outside so they can begin their migration journey to Mexico. Our male monarch butterfly's tag code is SGT545 and our female monarch butterfly's tag code is SGT546. We praise and thank the Lord the Master Creator who made such wonderful and beautiful butterflies for us to enjoy.

From the Principal's Desk:
Fish Days are here! "What are Fish Days?" you may ask. Well, we introduced our first multi-age integrated study unit this morning in chapel. Students will participate in their school "families" (K through grade 8) on Friday afternoons for the next 6 weeks. Each school family will rotate through all 6 different workshops over the course of the unit, completing their "Fish Passport" as they do so. This type of teaching approach is new to all of us. Research points out that this type of integrated multi-age teaching can both build a sense of overall wonder and excitement in learning, as well as encourage positive character traits among the students. As teachers, we aim to build our Graduate Expectation of teamwork, increase our students' knowledge of the complexities of God's creation and strengthen their oral communication skills. If we're doing things right, your child should be excited to tell you what he or she is learning in Fish Days!

It was also my privilege to join the public and Catholic principals from across Elgin County yesterday for the Elgin Community Nutrition Partnership, which funds breakfast and snack programs at school. Mrs Carrie Rempel and Mrs Jodie Hibbert have volunteered to be our lead parents coordinating our snack program and, we have received $2000 in funding. Over $200,000 in grants were awarded to Elgin County schools.  It is good for us to be in partnership with others in areas consistent with our Christian commitment - healthy snacks are certainly a common ground, and we look forward to getting our program running in the next few weeks. Stay tuned!
in Christian education, Keith Cameron, Principal

Praying for our Families:  Every Thursday morning at staff devotions we will be praying for 2 of our school families, the parents and their children.  Last week Thursday we prayed for Chris and Chantelle Bakker and Dave and Angie Bergen.

Please uphold in prayer Keli-lyn Lockyer’s Uncle.  On Monday Perry was hit by a car while riding his bike to work and suffered extensive injuries to his head.  He is in stable condition in a Hamilton hospital awaiting surgery.

Praying for our Staff:  The Board also encourages the membership to pray for one staff member each week.  This week we will remember Mrs. Groeneweg in prayer.

An Update on CEAF:

We have received the final drafts of the documents from the law firm of Morris, Kepes & Winter over the weekend and the photocopier is making copies.  We hope to have the envelopes in the mail today / tomorrow.  For those donors that gave us corrected addresses, the package should reach you this week. You will then need to make your decision regarding participation.
Morris, Kepes and Winter insisted on a paper copy of their documents to go to you and, if you sign on with them, you will need to send back to them a signed agreement again by mail to their office.  We have included the return envelope for you.
I trust this is the support that the affected OACS community is looking for in this matter.  It has been a difficult road for all of us. I will continue to pray for a positive resolution with CRA and trust that God will see us through these trying times.
The OACS will monitor this representative support offered by Morris, Kepes & Winter but the leadership will be coming from the firm. We are now turning our attention to our defence of a class action law suit that we are about to be served.  I would appreciate your prayers in this regard as well.
Jules de Jager

We use the funds exclusively to support our Compassion sponsor child and our Tuition Assistance Fund as a way of helping out others.
The Ride is in north London this year, starting at North Park Baptist Church.  We have confirmed that the 12 km route is on residential roads or parks, and is very suitable for children. Grades 5-8 students are invited to fundraise or simply register ($25 fee applies) with the ICS team. Sign up online at http://rideforrefuge.org/home and register with "Immanuel Christian School Team." Please indicate that you are riding for the charity "Immanuel Christian School."  As a parent, you are welcome to participate with younger children under your supervision. If your grade 5-8 student needs a ride, please contact Mr Cameron.

35th Annual Tornado Fun Run will be on Wed. Oct. 2 at the Ontario Police College.  For those interested in participating either running, walking or biking the 6 km’s can pre-register on line at www.eventsonline.ca
