From the Principal’s Desk:

I am excited by the ways God works! As a community, we have been working hard this past year to get the message about ICS “out there” to other Christian parents. Last week, ICS joined Grace Community Church in worship, these coming weeks we join Aylmer and then Tillsonburg CRC. Promotions Committee has been active in making contacts, and hosting “dodgeball mania.” Finance Committee has been developing and advocating for a new universal bursary program. Fundraising Committee has been working with our GST and Golf Committees, and building community support through Friday Family Fun Nights. Our teachers have been stretching their wings with Fish Days, the Fish Tales musical, and starting this Friday, with the new Gifts of Healing multi-age study. Lots of exciting things, keep being excited by it all!

And at the same time, God has opened new doors through means we haven’t directly cultivated! We have had three families send students to “school for a day,” and one family has just indicated that they wish to register their daughter for gr 7 next year! We were sought out by a homeschool family, with a view to an immediate start in early May (see my welcome below!). We have an invitation to present in Tillsonburg Alliance and North Broadway Baptist in June. God does have plans for “a hope and a future” (Jer 29:11) as our school poster declares! As important as our work is, we must also be faithful and committed in prayer. Our God opens doors in hearts that we cannot even think of! Come out to our membership meeting tonight in an excited and prayerful attitude!

in Christian education,
Keith Cameron, Principal

Praying for our families: This week we pray for Chris & Chantelle Baker and Dave & Angie Bergen.
Praying for our staff:  This week let’s pray for Mrs. Groeneweg. Please remember in prayer the Janssen family as Bernie starts his chemotherapy treatments this week. Also keep Marie Smit in your prayers as she has completed her second treatment last week and needs lots of rest.

The children have been homeschooled to date, and after placement interviews, they look forward to stepping into ICS for the remainder of the year!

PAUSE FOR PLAY - TURN OFF THE SCREENS WEEK - April 27 - May 3, 2014.
Did you know…….   You need to be active for a minimum of 60 minutes every day?
You need to bend and stretch every day?
You need to run, jump, skip or walk many times a day?
Experts recommend that children and youth should view screens no more than 2 hours per day.  On average, Canadian children and youth spend 4 - 6 hours a day viewing screens.  That is a lot of time sitting down and being inactive!!!  Pause to Play started on April 27th.  For 7 days, students will record the time they spend viewing screens along with the time they spend on physical activities.  The goal is to increase your physical activity to 60 minutes a day.  Regular physical activity helps to make you stronger, feel good, and have more energy.  You will find a Log Sheet and a Ticket Order form attached to the Journal this week.  Sheets need to be turned into your child’s homeroom teacher by May 5 to be entered for a draw for a participation prize!

Thanks: Volunteer School “Courier”!  Mr Pete Mantel has affirmed his desire to act as our “courier” in supporting the school office, making weekly runs for cream, stamps, bank deposits, recycling drop off, and sundry supplies. Thank-you!

Cheese Orders: Orders are due Wednesday, April 30th with delivery on Wed., May 7.

Keith and Kristyn Getty Concert Thursday, May 1, 2014 at the Aylmer CRC. Tickets are still available by email gettyconcertaylmer@hotmail.com
The Auxiliary is in need of a couple more volunteers to help the afternoon of the Getty Concert (3-5pm and 5-end) with meal prep/serving for the Getty group. They also require 4-5 big pots of soup.  Please contact Bettina Vandersleen 226-373-0584 or bett@amtelecom.net.

Coming Up! Gifts of Healing Multi-Age Study: We are going to look at this passage over 4 Friday afternoons in May, starting this Friday! In our multi-age “school family” groupings, we will work together to learn and delight in an aspect of our world. In this study, called Gifts of Healing, we’re looking at the healing of the man born blind in John 9, and at a modern-day medical healer. Each group will look at a different person - Mother Teresa, Florence Nightingale, Frederick Banting, Clara Barton, Louis Pasteur, or Jonas Salk. What will tie us together is the common story of Jesus’ healing of the blind man, and 4 “essential questions”:
1. Why is there illness in our world? What is wrong?
2. How are we called to work in the world today?
3. How should we respond to illness or wrong in our world?
4. Who really saw in this story? How do we really see?
Questions are good. If we can think of a question, we’re learning how to dig deeper in what we read or hear. If we can answer a question, we’re beginning to understand on a deeper level. Make this a dinner-table conversation on Friday night!

So What Do Teachers Do on a PD Day? Well, it’s our turn to learn, to get better at our teaching, and to be creative! Your teachers met in grade-level groups in Strathroy last week. We explored Project Based Learning (PBL): how it honours kids as image-bearing culture makers, how it might be structured into the school program, how it relates to Differentiated Instruction and assessment, how it might look in our K-8 classrooms. Each participant worked on a project design, there were great ideas posted around the gym by day’s end! Examples include: an urban design project, a Special Olympics project, a water safety project, and a five senses kindergarten project. Many of your teachers will be attending the 5 day Ontario Christian Teachers Academy this summer. We will look forward to bringing learning ideas to fruition in and out of the classroom at all grade levels!

Open House: We are once again opening our doors for the annual Spring Open House on Wednesday, May 7. This gives both Parents and Grandparents the opportunity to come into the school and join us in the Morning Chapel, enjoy refreshments and be able to visit with their children and grandchildren in their classrooms. Chapel begins at 8:50 AM, and you are welcome to visit up until (and including) morning recess.  This is a great opportunity to see your children/grandchildren's accomplishments throughout the school year.

Transportation:Bus Schedule for September 2015

From the Principal’s Desk:

It was good to declare the Hope we have on Easter Sunday, and again at the junior basketball tournament devotions: He is risen! He is risen indeed! Our Christian school, and our wider Ontario Alliance of Christian Schools is a blessing we should never take for granted, and one that should have us very excited!

Our Spring Membership Meeting is a chance to understand where our school is going, and to catch the excitement! It will be held on Wednesday, April 30 at 8:00 in the gym. Agendas went out last week.  Come out and get informed as to what is happening with your school, vote for new board members, and socialize with other parents. Volunteer hours: Did you know that when you attend a membership meeting it counts for 2 hours towards your volunteer time?  If you’re a parent and not a member, you should be, you can get an application from the office. If you are a member and cannot make it out, please remember that proxy votes are now allowed (see your agenda sent home last week for details).

Last Thursday I visited a wonderful school just outside Brockville. They have only 35 students from JK-8 - you don’t have to be big to be a good school, but you have to be creative and energized. Heritage Community Christian School Principal Jennifer Feenstra will be speaking at our membership meeting on thriving as a smaller school - hear what they are doing! Also, we have very interesting plans to balance this year’s budget, encourage family participation and keep tuition below the inflation rate - learn about the Universal Bursary Program and possibilities for teaching assignments! Are you interested yet?

in Christian education,
Keith Cameron, Principal and Chief Operating Officer (my ‘business’ title!)

Praying for our families: Thursday we prayed for Pete & Charlena Ypma and Jeff & Katie Zylstra.
Praying for our staff:  This week let’s pray for Mr. Cameron.
Praying for our community: Keep Marie Smit in your prayers as she goes for her second chemo treatment this week. Please remember in prayer the family of OACS Director Ray Hendriks as they mourn the recent loss of a wife and mother, Doreen.

Junior Basketball: Well done to our junior (grades 3-6) boys and girls. We had some really good plays, passing and sportmanship out there in the Bluewater Tournament yesterday! Girls played until the quarterfinals, while the boys played until the semis, all had fun and have shown great skill growth! Thanks to Mr Cameron and Ms Jones, our coaches!
