From the Principal’s Desk:

Parents, your grade 1-8 child is coming home with a new report card today. It is a new electronic format for our school, which has been based on a template produced by the Ontario Alliance of Christian Schools (OACS). The teaching staff and our Education Committee have carefully examined the report card, and adapted it for our school. We consider this report card one avenue among many to keep good communication happening between home and school.  You will note two sections: Growing in Wisdom (written comments on graduate expectations and academic performance); and a Summary of Academic Achievement. Along with OACS and the Ministry of Education, we have a common report card for grades 1-6, and 7-8. In common with schools across Ontario, we indicate performance against categories corresponding to the overall expectations of the Ministry of Education. Our school is committed to exceeding these expectations, while upholding the unchanging reality that our world belongs to God and our conviction that teachers should teach and assess from a uniquely Christian perspective. We spend time to carefully evaluate performance and comment on character and achievement in a manner that is loving and honest. We trust that these reports are helpful as you guide your children to "grow in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man" (Luke 2:52).
This week in class devotions and chapel, we have highlighted our Protectors Freedom from Bullying program. The Protectors places special emphasis on Bystanders, who have the most potential to diminish bullying and other harmful behaviour. As part of that emphasis, the program focuses on the creation of courage. Without courage, we cannot be merciful, kind and just consistently. We teach our students how to intervene in non-violent and positive ways. We also reinforce our multi-age student family links as we build a new front hallway display!

yours in Christ, Keith Cameron, Principal

In this school-wide project, students have examined different topics to have an understanding about the life of Jesus. What did Jesus wear? Which buildings did Jesus know? Who is in Jesus’ family? How did Jesus travel? What work did Jesus do? We will create a school-wide presentation for the Christmas program to take the community on a “Journey with Jesus” inside our school, with our grade 8s as “character hosts”.  Each classroom will be transformed into a biblical setting according to their topic as students present their work through props, costumes, artwork, written pieces, etc.

Service Projects for this Christmas Season
Food Drive for the Corner Cupboard: Monday Dec 1st is the start of the collection of non-perishable food under the decorated Christmas tree that will be in the front hall. Please help us by picking up a few extra items with your weekly groceries and send them to school with your child(ren)
Hat/Mittens/Socks for the Optimist Club: We will try to bless the less fortunate in our community by collecting new hats, mittens or socks to put under the tree. Transportation note: Transportation Committee would like to ensure that everyone is aware that if there is a bus cancellation due to snow or fog the bus drivers will be contacting the entire list. When there is a bus breakdown we will then utilize the Call List and the people in bold will be required to call their list. In terms of actual snow calls, we follow Southwest Transportation Services (http://www.mybigyellowbus.ca/), we do encourage everyone to utilize this website to determine school cancellations. Also please sign up for Facebook and Twitter for notifications of any bus disruptions.

Transportation Job Opportunity: The Transportation Committee is looking for applications for a spare bus driver. Applicants should ideally have a B-license and a clean driving record. (n.robinson@immanuelchristianschool.net).

Battle of the Books: Our readers have been doing a great job reading through their list of 10 books! In order to be finished by early February, our goal is to have read and made questions for a book every 2 weeks. Check on your child’s progress with him/her. It would be great to have a parent act as a coach for one of the teams. We have the question-making process well in hand. We especially need someone to work with the team during lunch and/or snack recess, once a week from February to April. Interested? Contact Mrs. R.

ATTENTION ALL PARENTS!  Do you need to have a night out away from the hassle that parenting brings? Or maybe there are some friends you haven’t gone out for dinner with for a while. Do you need to find a way to go Christmas shopping without your kids hanging on your arm and begging for every toy imaginable? Then this is for you! On Friday, December 5, students of the LDCSS prom committee are hosting a night of entertainment for all kids ages 3-11 from 5 until 9 p.m. The night will be hosted at London District Christian Secondary School (24 Braesyde Avenue) and will include fun filled games appropriate for all ages, pizza, followed by a movie and popcorn. To know whether or not we will have enough participants to make the night worthwhile, we ask that parents would RSVP by Wednesday, December 3.  You can RSVP to: Brittany Ypma: b.b.ypma@hotmail.com, Katelyn Damsma: kdamsma@ldcss.ca
We hope to see many kids come out!

From the Principal’s Desk:

Wow, we were encouraged following last week’s “Fall Social!” This was a transformation of our Fall Membership Meeting, and it was good to see over 40 people attend, including supporters, and established as well as newer families. In a social atmosphere facilitated by Jane Weverink’s x Ty desserts and Keith Sinke’s deep-fried Mars bars, we made new acquaintances and discussed three main questions:
1.     How do we build community?
2.     How do we engage volunteers?
3.     In light of our balanced financial state this year, how do we best deal with last year’s deficit?
Like Solomon in 1 Kings 3:9, we pray for a “discerning heart to govern... and to distinguish between right and wrong,” as we move forward in building a flourishing school together. Some of the discussions are posted on our Facebook page - if you could not make the meeting, check out the discussion, and plan on being part of our Spring social and meeting.

We are also part of a wider Ontario Alliance of Christian Schools (OACS), which had its Annual General Meeting last Saturday. Chris Bakker and I attended representing ICS as a member school. Aspirations in the wider Christian education community include fostering relationships with our Ministry of Education of mutual respect and support (the climate is really chilly right now), stewardly and wise financial models, helping smaller schools flourish, keeping our Christian identity strong. We were reminded that our “competition” is not our local public schools, but rather our secular, narcissistic and hedonistic youth and adult culture in the mall, city hall, and mass media. In the words of Revelation 3, we were encouraged to not be lukewarm, but passionate in our commitment to the Christian education of our children!

yours in Christ, Keith Cameron, Principal
