Mission:  The mission of Immanuel Christian School is to prepare students to meet the challenge of the world and culture they live in as young and growing Christians.  Thus, students are taught the skill of discernment in the light of God’s Word, the practice of stewardship for creation, the required commitment to a life of Christian service, and the beauty of witness through modeling God’s love in a broken world.

From the Principal’s Desk:

Last week I joined school leaders from across Ontario at the Ontario Christian Schools Administrators Association Fall Conference. We reflected on our responsibilities to lead, guide and shape our organizations, our staff and our students. Our devotions from Revelation 13 and 14 on what it means to use the power entrusted to us as the Lamb and not as the beast were especially interesting! As a member of the Ontario Alliance of Christian Schools, we have a rich spiritual heritage and we work with exceptionally talented and dedicated Christians - it is a blessing to connect and share!

You will notice our PA day this Friday. Parents, we appreciate the time you give us as we develop and tune our upcoming multi-age integrated study - “Canadian Stories.” Working from our school theme of “Tell the Story,” we will be asking: “How do Canadian stories weave into our lives?”  In our school families spanning K through gr 8, students will uncover the stories and contributions of significant Canadians past and present. They will recognize how God works through ordinary people to “keep Canada glorious and free” despite humanity’s brokenness. Students will be challenged to see how they are being guided to continue the story. God invites us to partner with him in keeping Canada a place of splendour where we can be free to delight in and discover his gifts. Ever wonder how Boaz’ sandal (Ruth 4) and the story of our national flag are similar? Stay tuned for more details as we start our integrated study on Fri Oct 16!

Lastly, I hope to encourage you to come out for our Care2Cycle bicycling fundraiser on Saturday, with registration at 8 am. Even if you have not registered, enjoy the company as you cycle 10 km (suitable for any child on 2 wheels), 30 km or 50 km. We will hold a small “Rabbit Rodeo” event for children aged 4-8 from 8-8:45 (with a few bike skills stands), then we’ll dispatch our riders at 9 am. Every little donation helps as we seek to cover our sponsorship costs for Helen Arias through Compassion Canada, and as we partner with Grace Community Church in their Syrian refugee sponsorship!
in Christian education, Keith Cameron, Principal and Chief Operating Officer

Praying for our families: Please join our staff as we pray for Nathan & Valerie Bokman and Jake & Lisa Boldt. We would also like to remember in prayer our school families who have dealt with significant losses this past week: Abe & Tricia Giesbrecht on the loss of another Uncle; Mike & Anne Reimer on the passing of Mike’s brother in Texas; and the family of Mr. TenBruggencate on the passing of his sister in law after a long battle with cancer.

Praying for our staff: Please pray for Mrs. Cameron

Care 2 Cycle - this Saturday October 3 @ 8am! This is a local fundraiser with Grace Community Church replacing Ride for Refuge. This is the sole fundraiser for the ICS Compassion Child (Helen Michel Guevara Arias), with any excess going to our Tuition Assistance fund.  We hope to raise $3000, Grace’s need is much higher… We are very excited to join with Grace Community in their efforts to fundraise for their Syrian Refugee Family Sponsorship! Come out and cycle the 10km Family Ride, the 30km Leg Stretcher or the 50km Calf Burner. There's even a “Rabbit Rodeo” for ages 4-8. Every little bit helps us meet our charitable commitments, and have fun while doing so!

From the Ladies Auxiliary
APPLE PIES!! -   Is your order for pies in yet?  Tomorrow, Oct 1 is the deadline!  Also, we'd like more help for assembling them  Wed. Oct 7 from 9- about 2:30.  You do not have to help the whole time - even a few hours would be great.  Lunch provided!  Contact the school office or Emily Schuurman (877-2320 or schuur7@execulink.com) to volenteer.
*Please note that the auxiliary will not be hosting its annual Christmas Sweets Treats and Treasures sale this year.  The Apple Pies will be one of our main fundraisers!
Private Music Lessons:  Not every school is blessed with 6 experienced musicians interested in providing music lessons during the school day!  These teachers are not part of the ICS staff; we simply make a room available to them.  These teachers take students from their classrooms to have private lessons right at school.  If you would like to make arrangements for private lessons at school, contact the teacher:

Breakfast Program: We run our breakfast snack program through Ontario Student

Nutrition Program (OSNP) Elgin. Over the course of a year, we receive funding of $3440 from

various public funds and charities! As a public awareness, OSNP is asking you to visit

http://www.sayyes.studentnutritionpledge.com/ and take a free pledge. Each pledge = $1 donated

to our nutrition program, how easy is that?

Looking for Music and Instruments: If you have a red Standard of Excellence band book (for any

instrument) laying around your house that belongs to ICS, please return it to school as soon as

possible so that it can be used for our students this year. Also, if you have any band instruments at

your house that no one is playing and you would be willing to donate them to ICS, please contact

Soccer:  The next practice is Thursday, October 1, 3:30-5:00 p.m.  The Bluewater Christian

Schools, Division B, Soccer Tournament is scheduled to be held on Thursday, October 15, at the

Warwick Soccer Complex (Arkona).  The rain date is Friday, October 16.  Drivers will be needed.

Cross Country: The 2015 Woodstock District Cross Country Competition will be held on Tue Oct 6 at Stratford Disctrict Christian School. We will depart from ICS at 8:35 right after the morning bus arrives, and hope to return just after lunch.  Your child should dress for being outside, bring a packed healthy lunch and extra snack, money for the canteen if desired (no more than a few dollars), spare clothing and running attire including the ICS Athletics t-shirt. Parents may also ride the bus, and I’m hoping for a few of you to act as chaperones! Permission forms were at the end of the Journal last Weds, and were due today.

Library: All students have now visited the library and checked books out. Since we lend materials for 2 weeks, many of the items are due back tomorrow. Get into the habit of checking the date due slip in the front pocket to see if the book needs to be returned. Renewals are allowed if there is not a long waiting list for the item. We try to send out pink “overdue” slips each week. Students should take them home as reminders of what needs to be returned. If there is an error in your child’s overdue record, send a note to school or an email to Mrs. Robinson (n.robinson@immanuelchristianschool.net) so we can work together to sort it out. Students are encouraged to use plastic bags when transporting their books to give a little extra protection against backpack spills.

MarshQuest Update and Thank you: Many thanks to Mrs. W. Abell, Mrs. C. Janssens, Mrs. T. Karson and Mrs. L. Loewen for accompanying us on our Field Trip to the Yarmouth Natural Heritage Area, Herb Kebbel Wetlands. We had a fine weather day and enjoyed participating in many learning activities presented by Catfish Creek Conservation Authority area supervisor, Mr. Ed Pietrzak, and students from the Environmental Leadership Program at East Elgin Secondary School.
We seined a section of water to find larger living organisms that live in this wetland habitat. We identified different fish species and recorded data on their size and age. We learned about the impact humans have had on wetland habitat and on the species that depend on them for survival. We learned about the importance of “variety” and how loss of any one species can be bad for the habitat.
We had fun using dip nets to figure out what kinds of organisms live in a wetland, and we did some bird watching. One of our highlights in the day was the tent show during lunch time, where we enjoyed a snake presentation. In God’s creation there is use and purpose for every species. It was a great day!
