The ICS Journal

Mission:  The mission of Immanuel Christian School is to prepare students to meet the challenge of the world and culture they live in as young and growing Christians.  Thus, students are taught the skill of discernment in the light of God’s Word, the practice of stewardship for creation, the required commitment to a life of Christian service, and the beauty of witness through modeling God’s love in a broken world.

Please note: Each year, we have the privilege of having our teachers gather with Christian teachers from across Ontario at Redeemer University for an annual time of worship and professional development. There is no school this Thursday and Friday as we do so - thank-you to parents for giving us this time!

From the Principal’s Desk:

Our board vision for this year is: “Inspiring Christian community to sustain and prosper ICS.” The Family Fun Night last Friday was a start to that emphasis - good food and a chance to mingle! This is especially important for our newer families and their partner families as we get to know each other. Our school community also extends beyond the nuclear family. Today is Grandparents and Senior Friends Day, and we see the wisdom and support of grandparents as God’s plan as we “tell to the generation to come the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord” (Psalm 78:4)!

As a Christian school community, we want to speak into all aspects of life. We also acknowledge that our convictions may lead to different decisions in how we act. One of these differences is Oct 31. As a school, we choose to recognize Reformation Day and Luther’s decision to pre-empt All Saints’ Day by nailing his 95 theses to the Wittenburg church door (see the door displayed in the school entry!). We neither support nor condemn Halloween activities, leaving those decisions where they belong with parents. Knowing that sugar and food colouring make for poor learning, please ensure lunches are reasonably healthy next week still, and avoid sending in “extra” candy to share!

Praying for our families: Please join our staff as we pray for Jim & Helen Friesen as well as Abe & Tricia Giesbrecht

Friday Family Fun Night Thank you!
Thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered, organized, ordered and ate at last Friday’s welcome back night. It was an excellent kick off with 149 coming through, lots of pumpkins carved, desserts devoured and $622.87 profit over the two hours! What a blessed evening!
See you next month, on Friday Nov 13th for Appreciation Night!

Ash Borer, oh, no - our playground trees are dying! We have had our playground shade trees assessed, and the ash borer is killing off the limbs, requiring their removal this Fall. Commercial felling will cost around $1000, but our Maint Ctte is considering doing the job in-house. If you might be interested in purchasing ash firewood to defray the costs, please contact the office. As well, we are seeking ideas for replacement trees which will be native to this area, will provide shade, not drop fruit and have smaller leaves which will not cover the play area in the Fall. Have ideas - please contact the Principal!

Library - Mrs. Robinson (n.robinson@immanuelchristianschool.net)
  • Have you read an Eric Walters book yet? Be sure to fill in a stone to add to our wall. Attached to the Journal is an order form of Eric Walters’ books. Return the form and payment to the school office by Thursday, Nov 5 if you would like to order any books. Parents are welcome to join us for his presentation the morning of Nov 16.
  • Battle of the Books - Interested students have signed up and should now read ONLY Battle books until they have finished all 10. Enjoy your reading!  Parents - Contact Mrs. Robinson for more information or if you are willing to help with a team on Battle Day or by reading a book and preparing questions for practices.

Band:  The ICS band has started after school practices on Mondays from 3:30-4:30pm.  This band is open to Grade 7&8 students only, as we have limited instruments available.  The band will be playing different music than what is being practiced in Gr 7/8 music class.  Band will be meeting every Monday after school, except the first Monday of each month (as Mrs Cameron needs to attend the ICS staff meeting).

Update on Farewell to Mrs Groeneweg and JK/SK Teacher Hiring: Please mark your calendars for Fri Nov 12 - the Friday Family Fun Night will be our community farewell for Mrs Ina Groeneweg and her husband Ef as they prepare to move to Comox, BC. One of Mrs Groeneweg’s departing tasks is assisting with the hiring process for a new JK/SK teacher (along with the Principal, Ms. Pieters and Mrs Chantelle Bakker as Ed Ctte rep). Over the next week, we are finishing “teaching interviews”. Please pray for God’s wisdom as we move forward in this!

Family Friendly Flu Clinic: St. Thomas Elgin Public health is holding a family flu clinic from 4-7pm. It will have crafts, face painting and other fun in order to make the experience for children better.  FluMist is now available for age groups 2-17 years old. Save time, get your consent form online at www.elginhealth.on.ca/flu

Electives: Do you have a special talent you can share with our student body? Electives are a 5 week unit for grades 4-8 in late January to early February. In the past we have included activities such as Woodworking, Cooking & Baking, Badminton, Computers, Small Engines, Cake Decorating, Curling and others. If you can help please contact the office.

Grade 9 options: parents, our board supports and recommends our affiliated high school, London District Christian Secondary School, as a great option after ICS. The LDCSS option is also supported by our bus routes, and each school provides a reduction if siblings are enrolled in both schools (for example, we do not charge for busing to LDCSS). As parents, take the time to understand your options and prayerfully make your choices. We will publish LDCSS information, and you will easily find information for East Elgin Secondary (regular program and ASPIRE), Providence Reformed Collegiate, or other schools of interest (contact the office if you need help, please).
Grade 8 day at LDCSS: Wednesday, November 4 (corrected date) - Current Grade 8 students are invited to be a student at LDCSS for the day. Regardless of possible high school choice, we allow all our grade 8s to participate in this day together. New this year - parents are also invited for a separate tour and information session.
