The ICS Journal

Wednesday, November 25th, 2015

Mission:  The mission of Immanuel Christian School is to prepare students to meet the challenge of the world and culture they live in as young and growing Christians.  Thus, students are taught the skill of discernment in the light of God’s Word, the practice of stewardship for creation, the required commitment to a life of Christian service, and the beauty of witness through modeling God’s love in a broken world.

From the Principal’s Desk:

Directly relating to our membership meeting tonight (I hope to see you there at 8!), I came across a piece from Ontario Alliance of Christian Schools Director Ray Hendriks in the Multiplier newsletter:

Many parents who enroll their children in our schools today are not familiar with the traditional OACS school membership model. Their experiences are different and while they are no less committed to Christian education, this membership structure does not seem all that important…
A vibrant and active school society can ensure longevity for a school in its community. Principals will come and go in a school’s life, boards change completely in pre-set cycles, parents will be engaged in the school formally for only the few years in which their children attend that school. Longevity and consistency is found in the members of the society—who can join at age 18 and stay involved for the rest of their lives.
While it may not be easy, and sometimes plainly uncomfortable, I still believe in the society model for membership that has lived historically in our schools. I believe that standing accountable before a society of a like-minded membership committed to the cause of Christian day school education is good for the future of our schools. I believe that the responsibility for ensuring that our schools continue to tell the story of Christ’s faithfulness to the next generations is in good hands when entrusted as communal responsibility. And ultimately I believe that this society model is more reflective of the narrative we find in Scriptures, that of a community of believers united in moving forward toward realizing the Kingdom of God.
