From the Principal’s Desk:
It is already time to think about re-enrolments for 2016-2017! We praise God for increased interest in Christian education at ICS and we are committed to growing in a healthy manner. We are on the border of needing classroom assistance or another class. Dealing with past deficit budgets, we also want to ensure that growth generates the tuition income to fund it. We may need to run a wait list, but we want to make that a short term arrangement. So, by March 30, 2016, we are asking all families to confirm their places at ICS by completing the enrolment confirmation form at: https://goo.gl/lqRlq0 (also emailed to you, and on our Facebook site). A postdated nonrefundable cheque of $1000 will be required to confirm enrolment. Cheques should be dated 1 Sep 2016. Tuition will be confirmed at the May membership meeting. It is expected to remain in its current range, though the Universal Bursary may be discontinued. Your tuition invoice in May or June will reflect a credit for the tuition deposit as well as your TRIP income. We appreciate that this is a much earlier time frame than in the past, but the vast majority of our families are committed to education from K through to gr 8. Please speak with me with any questions.

Policy Updates. Our board is working to manage our recent growth well. Please read the complete details at: http://www.immanuelchristianschool.net/policybook.htm. The policy changes will help us in the details of enrolment, re-enrolment, withdrawal, and tuition incentives:
- 11.03 Tuition Payment. Added that “Enrolment and re-registration carry a financial obligation (see policy 11.04). Enrolments and re-registrations will be considered provisional until a post-dated deposit has been received.  The date for registration will be set by the Principal, in consultation with the Board, annually.” Rationale: our classes for 5 day SK, gr.1, gr.2, gr.3 are currently full already with next year’s predictions. We do not want to turn away potential new families if we will have vacancies from non returning families.
- 11.04 Tuition Refund. Upon enrolment or re-registration, the first and last month’s tuition is a non-refundable deposit to allow for staff hiring and materials ordering. Rationale: first and last month is an easily understood penalty for breaking a tuition commitment. We incur costs by committing to salaries and materials. A revised tuition refund policy is also required to firm up next year’s enrolment earlier.
- 11.06 Tuition Incentives. No changes to our New to Immanuel discount of 80% tuition the first year. Pastoral incentive has been withdrawn. Rationale: pastoral incentive is controversial to administer. Our New to Immanuel incentive for new families or Tuition Assistance for those in need is available for all.
- 11.10 GIFTS. GIFTS hours are no longer tied with the Universal Bursary but with a premium fee of $200 for those who do not complete and submit their hours. Rationale: we still need a financial incentive for GIFTS tied with tuition. The Universal Bursary may or may not be the best way to use Spring Drive donations - ideally, the Drive funds capital (big purchase) projects, not school operations.

Report Cards & Parent-Teacher conferences: Term 2 report cards will be sent home on March 9th. The second set of Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held on March 23rd after returning from March Break.

Ontario Student Nutrition Program:  Please help support our school’s student nutrition program by Taking the Pledge and Say Yes to Good Food in Schools!   For every NEW pledge directed for ICS, OSNP will donate a free breakfast or snack to our school’s nutrition program.  It cost you nothing, only a minute of your time.  First, go to www.osnp.ca & enter your name. Next, enter our school’s address: (75 Caverly Road, Aylmer, N5H 2P6).  It’s that simple.  Students can take the pledge too and are encouraged to do so as well using their school e-mail address.  This 2nd round of the campaign will run until June 29, 2016.  We recently received a cheque for the number of pledges that were directed at our school last fall.  Thanks to all participated.

ARE YOU CREATIVE? Do you enjoy scrap-booking? Then we have a job for you!!!   The Yearbook committee is looking for a few people who would be interested in creating a few pages for the ICS student yearbook. The students love reminiscing about all they have done at ICS,  This would be another great way to get some volunteer hours for the school.  Please let the office know soon, so we can begin designing the 2015/16 yearbook.

Private Music Lessons: Guitar Lessons are still available at Immanuel with Guy Miskelly. Rock, Blues, Country, Jazz, Theory and Ear Training. For more information contact Guy Miskelly at 519-859-6915 or guymiskelly.com

From the Principal’s Desk:
Preparing for our monthly Board meeting, I was reflecting on how our enrolment has changed over the past few years here at Immanuel. Right now, we are on the borderline of being full for SK through to gr 4! God has blessed us! The blessing extends beyond just more students in Christian education. Our growth last year directly led to a much more favourable “cost per student” number, meaning your 2015 tax receipts are bigger. We have changed our New to Immanuel incentive to allow us to better meet our costs. But, without the former tuition incentives filling up “empty” seats, we would have a much emptier school of maybe 79 children - in fact, we are at 121! Without the growth, we would have had to consider amongst tough choices: increasing tuition a lot, or letting a teacher go, and triple grades in 3/4/5 or 6/7/8… That is not the story today - instead it is one of our board committed to managing growth well, preserving program excellence and growth in Christian character. Our community is enriched by every family, “core” or “new” - let’s tell that story!

Protectors @ Home: We’re in the OACS news! See our Facebook post for the link. As well as being published (which is good for encouraging others to think on this too), we want to keep our focus on taking courage and doing the right thing. We have attached a booklet to this Journal to help with that at home. May God bless our actions as we seek to be faithful to him in this area and grow community.
Praying for our parents: Please join us as we pray for Murray & Georgie Rodenburg and Alec & Elaine Saarloos.

Galatians 5:22-26 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.”
Mathmatics: We are starting new units that continue with Fractions. Try online games to practice this skill.
Spelling: List 16 quiz and worksheet is due on Friday.
Health:  Test on Monday, Feb. 22 covering “People Need People”. Students may sign out test books from Mr. TenBruggencate.
Language Arts: LA is easily applied as a cross curricular. Is your child struggling to use capitals in the correct place, knowing proper punctuation, spelling and how to start and end a sentence with good grammar? LA is being applied in penmanship by learning literary devices such as hyperbole, simile, alliteration and metaphors. Ask your child to explain what these are. Novel reading helps us through teacher modeling of expression, comprehension and recognition of literary devises. We are currently reading The City of Ember.
Social Studies: Some students are not getting their notes complete to their grade level. Please check planners to see if your child needs some help. Books are sent home for completion if they don’t ask for help at school.
Art: Bring an object you want to draw for Wednesday, February 17th.
