MAP summary.jpgFrom the Principal’s Desk:
At ICS, we choose to emphasize both the quality of our program and the character of our students (as seen in our Graduate expectations). Our PA day on February 1st focused on staff team building and digging into the data from our recent Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests. These are both key elements of a quality program. We will have MAP results to share with you alongside the Term 2 reports. We feel that we can encourage growth by involving students and parents in goal-setting. We have a connection form with our reports to allow students to identify their best work, and goals for improvement. The form also allows parents to declare how you will support your child. Seeking to foster growth and engagement, we will be encouraging every child from grades 1-8 to set goals, with your parental input, for Term 3. We believe that fostering student and parental engagement in learning leads to greater opportunities for academic growth: “a cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

FROM THE CLASSROOMS:

Valentine heartValentines Day!  Did you know that Valentinus was a priest in the second century AD? According to one story, he defied the order of the emperor and secretly married Christian couples. In jail, Valentine healed the jailer's blind daughter. On the day of his execution he left her a note that was signed “Your Valentine.”

Red, White and Pink Day:We will be having red, white and pink day on Friday, February 12! Come dressed as creatively as you can in those colours. We’d like to encourage our students who wish to give Valentines to classmates. We’d recommend cards, but not candy treats for the class - the fun day can get overwhelmed by candy and antics!  Let’s keep whole class treats for birthday celebrations, please...

Galatians 5:22-26 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.”
Mathmatics: We are starting new units that continue with Fractions. Try online games to practice this skill. Can you solve the riddle? >>>>
Spelling: List 16 quiz and worksheet is due on Friday.
Language Arts: LA is easily applied as a cross curricular. Is your child struggling to use capitals in the correct place, knowing proper punctuation, spelling and how to start and end a sentence with good grammar? LA is being applied in penmanship by learning literary devices such as hyperbole, simile, alliteration and metaphors. Ask your child to explain what these are. Novel reading helps us through teacher modeling of expression, comprehension and recognition of literary devises. We are currently reading The City of Ember.
Social Studies: Some students are not getting their notes complete to their grade level. Please check planners to see if your child needs some help. Books are sent home for completion if they don’t ask for help at school.
