From the Board:

Please find below a summary of our recent Board work - there’s lots going on, and we have dedicated, passionate board members working to discern God’s guidance for our school!
- Committees have been working on their action plans to help the Board fulfill their 2014/15 Board Vision: Resourceful with God's gifts, we strive to be an excellent, innovative, affordable, decidedly Christian school. We seek to excite and involve the area Christian community, alumni, and parents to prosper our school.  We ask you as a school community to help us by getting involved.
- Numerous policies were updated.  Two new polices were also approved:
- Tuition Payment Policy 11.03 guides Finance Committee in seeking tuition payments, particularly those in arrears
- Duties of a Lead Teacher Policy 3.17 outlines Ms. Pieters current role, instead of the standard Vice Principal role
- Fundraising committee needs more help, and plan to drop the monthly dinners unless they receive volunteers to oversee them.
- There continues to be interest among new families to enroll at ICS, but since the grade 1/2 class is full, plans were made for an assistant to help Ms. Pieters if more registrations were received.
(For more detailed minutes, see the board minutes posted on our website: http://www.immanuelchristianschool.net/boardminutes.htm)

on behalf of the ICS board - Jane Weverink, Secretary

If students need their books longer, they should renew them during library time.  Last week, a reminder list was given at noon to students with overdue books.  In the future, this overdue list will be on PINK paper which is meant to be a bright reminder to go looking for books.  Students with overdue books may be restricted in checkouts that week. THURSDAYS ARE LIBRARY DAYS FOR GRADES 1 TO 8!

Volunteer Classroom Assistant Sought: We have a new family wanting to register, with children in SK and gr 2. With a very full gr 1/2 class, we can only accept this registration with a classroom assistant in place 5 days a week in the mornings when we teach math and language. Enquiries and applications should be made to Ms Marianne Pieters (m.pieters@immanuelchristianschool.net) by this Fri Sep 26 at 3 pm.

From the Principal's Desk:

I see all sorts of new faces dropping in at the office and picking up children after school - it is great to have added many new families, both JKs and all other grades! I am still getting to know everyone, and Amanda and I would intend on visiting with our new families in Oct or Nov to see how you’re doing in the ICS community. Our Education Committee has also re-invigorated our Parent Partnership program, with new families being grouped with an established “sponsor” family. I’ve also seen new friendships starting in the school yard, and birthday party invitations including new students. We need to be intentionally friendly in order to get to know each other - if there’s someone you do not know, please introduce yourself to him or her! All these things help us build the Christian community for which ICS is known, and through which God blesses us in so may ways.

P.S. Bee Aware Again! Though postponed due to cold, wet bee-unfriendly weather last weekend, I’ll be (somewhat) looking forward to putting on a demo bee beard this coming Saturday at 2:30 pm at Clovermead Apiaries! Come on out to see, or check out the photos we’ll post on Facebook!

yours in Christ,
Keith Cameron, Principal

Book, Knowledge, Learning
We need at least one more adult reading buddy! Do you have 30 mins in the morning once weekly to read with a grade 1-5 student? This will help the student gain confidence and skills. Plus, you get to enjoy stories! Please speak to Mrs Vanderhoek if you are available

Ride for Refuge Fundraiser Sat Oct 4: We have learned that all riders wanting to receive t-shirts at the RIDE need to be registered online, with fundraising logged, by midnight Sep 21! One week only!logo.gif

The Ride is a Christian umbrella group that raises funds for the displaced, vulnerable or exploited. Partner charities receive from 60-70% of funds raised, depending on amount. We partner with the Ride to raise funds for our school Compassion Child and for our Tuition Assistance fund. We have received around $2000 in the past, making this a good fundraiser!

Conveniently, we are “riding on our own”, with 10 km, 30 km and 50 km starting from ICS on Sat Oct 4. Registration is at 8 am, with the Ride from 8:30 - 11 am. This is a family event, and all ages are welcome! To conform with RIDE rules, only students in gr 7-8 may ride on their own, while parents must accompany younger children. This is a free event, but fundraising is encouraged (forms are available online or in the office). We recommend fundraising by asking family members and friends, any amount is fine. Children raising $75 and adults raising $150 receive a free t-shirt if you meet the 21 Sep deadline.

We also need help! If you can volunteer with registration, safety vehicle, rest stops or refreshments afterwards, please contact the school. Sign up by clicking the “register” link at the top of the page at: http://rideforrefuge.org/partner/icsaylmer.

ICS Fundraising Committee needs YOU!!
There are some great upcoming events in the works - like a big evening in January, a Farm Crawl in Spring, a Road Rally, Food wagon/French Fry Truck opportunities and more...  You are wanted to assist with these events and/or join the Fundraising Committee.  It is a fun, hands on committee that meets 11 times a year - a great way to be directly involved in your child's education, get to know your fellow school families, put in your volunteer hours, and keep tuition costs in check.
The fundraising goal this year is once again $80,000 - which was exceeded by $6,396 last year!!
Please contact the school office or j.versnick@immanuelchristianschool.net to jump on board... or be prepared to receive a phone call soon asking for your participation :-)  THANK YOU!!

Grades 6-8 Coed Soccer: Based on student numbers, we are fielding a coed team again this year, under the direction of our coach, Mrs Helen Friesen.  Practices will be Tue and Thu at lunch, and Wed after school until 5 pm.  Students need to arrange their own rides home for the Wednesday  after-school practice.  Please come prepared with shin pads, soccer shoes, socks, shorts and a T-shirt. The Bluewater District School Soccer Tournament is scheduled for Thursday, October 2, in Oil Springs. The rain date: Friday, October 3, 2014. (Coordinator: Mrs. T. VanderHoek)

Cross Country:  Change in Run Times! Due to adult reading buddies, the Grades 2-8 students will train with Mr. Cameron from 8:30 – 8:50 on Fri, with a Mon practice for gr 5-8.  All: come ready to have fast fun this Fri!

East Elgin Youth Basketball Clinic: An 8 week long clinic beginning the week of Sept 29th. See registration form attached. All forms and $ must be handed in to Ms. Jones by this Friday.

Library News: All materials are out on a 2 week loan.  Students are encouraged to check the date due slip in each item to help them return their checkouts on time.  Transporting library books to and from school in a plastic bag is a good way to protect them from leaky water bottles.  If you have questions about the library, feel free to contact Mrs. Robinson.

Memory Work: for Sept. 24 verse 1 of We Will Glorify
We will glorify the King of kings, we will glorify the lamb;
we will glorify the Lord of lords, who is the great I Am.

“Due date” in about three weeks: On September 4 Phoebe brought in a caterpillar that was eating dill leaves. After careful examination we discovered it was a swallowtail caterpillar and not a monarch caterpillar like we had last year. On September 8 we watched the caterpillar preparing itself to hang on the branch. The next day it was hanging. On September 10 the caterpillar shed its skin and turned into a chrysalis. The chrysalis now looks just like the bark of a branch. We are hoping we may witness the miracle of a swallowtail butterfly being born right in our classroom sometime between September 24 to October 1. Come in and see our chrysalis and marvel with us how intricate God’s creation is.
Bible: Please have your child return all the Bible pages that they took home  to complete the at home section regarding the book of James. Thank you
