Mission:  The mission of Immanuel Christian School is to prepare students to meet the challenge of the world and culture they live in as young and growing Christians.  Thus, students are taught the skill of discernment in the light of God’s Word, the practice of stewardship for creation, the required commitment to a life of Christian service, and the beauty of witness through modeling God’s love in a broken world.

As staff, we spent yesterday planning for our upcoming integrated study, “Journey with Jesus.”  Integrated studies are one example of the uniqueness of an ICS education - we try to create authentic Christian learning experiences, crossing subject lines, working on a common school project, and sometimes mixing up the grade levels. This project will culminate in a school-wide presentation for the Christmas program to take the community on a “Journey with Jesus” inside our school.
Mrs Ina Groeneweg has led the development of this unit, and we are excited to start this coming Friday afternoon! In this grade-level-wide project students examine different topics to have an understanding about the life of Jesus. Each class will focus on a particular aspect of Jesus’ life and conduct research as directed by each teacher. The journey will begin with the manger (Christmas) and end with the cross (Easter) with each class presenting an aspect of Jesus’ life in between. Each classroom will be transformed into a biblical setting according to their topic as students present their work. We look forward to hosting you as our audience on December 17th!
yours in Christian education, Keith Cameron, Principal

Library News:  Last year I (Mrs. Robinson) joined the newly-formed OACS Library Advisory Council.  Our task was (and is) to review the status of school libraries in our organization and provide support for school libraries and librarians. As a result of our work, we have a few exciting online resources to share with you.
1. The OACS Virtual Library Commons is now an active website (go to library.oacs.org). There you will find links to reference materials, books, homework helps and more.
2. We are very excited to offer a free 5 week trial of the online Britannica Encyclopedia (go thorough the OACS Virtual Learning Commons site or http://school.eb.com). This is an excellent alternative to quick, but less reliable, information from google or wikipedia.  For the trial, access info is as follows:
                             user name: ontarioacs
                             password: ontarioacs
We will be using both of these resources as part of our Library skills classes and research. Go ahead and explore with your child!
Volleyball: Gr 7-8 are encouraged to try out!
Boys’ volleyball tryouts and practices will be Tuesdays & Thursdays at lunch, starting Thursday Oct 9th, with Mr TenBruggencate coaching.
Girls volleyball will start on Monday after school Oct 6th until 5pm as well as Wednesday lunch with Mrs Bosma and Mr Cameron coaching.
Canadian Test of Basic Skills 2014: CTBS is a standardized test completed across OACS schools as a means of establishing performance benchmarks for individual students, classes and between schools (both within and outside of OACS).  While the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (test which CTBS is based upon) has been updated, CTBS still follows old norms for this year. This lack of updating is of concern, but there are few readily available or affordable alternatives. To give us continuous tracking, gr 3-8 students at ICS will complete the Language and Math tests from Oct 20-27 (one or two tests per day). As far as possible, please ensure that your student is present at school over this time (avoid discretionary absences).

Today the students took home their A.R. report showing how they did on the quizzes they have done so far. Please let me know if there are books you have read at home that your child could do an A.R. quiz on at school. Any ICS library books with a pink, green or yellow happy face sticker on the spine of the book means that a student could do an A.R. quiz on that book at school.
Intergenerational Project: Chartwell Aylmer Retirement Residences is starting a new HOPE (Helping Others for Purposeful Engagement) Project. This year they are filling boxes for Operation Christmas Child and they have invited us to join them in this project. Chartwell will be doing the same for boys and girls 2-4 years old and 10-14 years old. On Nov. 7 at 1:45 p.m. we hope to join the residence at Chartwell for a packing party. We will bring all our gifts to Chartwell and help pack the gifts into shoeboxes. If each one brings in $4.00 we could also cover the $7.00 shipping cost per box.
