November 19th Journal

Wednesday, November 19th, 2014

Mission:  The mission of Immanuel Christian School is to prepare students to meet the challenge of the world and culture they live in as young and growing Christians.  Thus, students are taught the skill of discernment in the light of God’s Word, the practice of stewardship for creation, the required commitment to a life of Christian service, and the beauty of witness through modeling God’s love in a broken world.

From the Principal’s Desk:

Wow, we were encouraged following last week’s “Fall Social!” This was a transformation of our Fall Membership Meeting, and it was good to see over 40 people attend, including supporters, and established as well as newer families. In a social atmosphere facilitated by Jane Weverink’s x Ty desserts and Keith Sinke’s deep-fried Mars bars, we made new acquaintances and discussed three main questions:
1.     How do we build community?
2.     How do we engage volunteers?
3.     In light of our balanced financial state this year, how do we best deal with last year’s deficit?
Like Solomon in 1 Kings 3:9, we pray for a “discerning heart to govern... and to distinguish between right and wrong,” as we move forward in building a flourishing school together. Some of the discussions are posted on our Facebook page - if you could not make the meeting, check out the discussion, and plan on being part of our Spring social and meeting.

We are also part of a wider Ontario Alliance of Christian Schools (OACS), which had its Annual General Meeting last Saturday. Chris Bakker and I attended representing ICS as a member school. Aspirations in the wider Christian education community include fostering relationships with our Ministry of Education of mutual respect and support (the climate is really chilly right now), stewardly and wise financial models, helping smaller schools flourish, keeping our Christian identity strong. We were reminded that our “competition” is not our local public schools, but rather our secular, narcissistic and hedonistic youth and adult culture in the mall, city hall, and mass media. In the words of Revelation 3, we were encouraged to not be lukewarm, but passionate in our commitment to the Christian education of our children!

yours in Christ, Keith Cameron, Principal

We trust that these reports are helpful as you guide your children to "grow in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man" (Luke 2:52).

Transportation Job Opportunity: The Transportation Committee is looking for applications for a spare bus driver. Applicants should ideally have a B-license and a clean driving record. Electives: Do you have a special talent you can share with our student body? Electives are a 5 week unit for grades 4-8 in late January - early February. In the past we have included activities such as Woodworking, Cooking and Baking, Badminton, Computers, Small Engines, Cake Decorating, Curling and the like. Can you help? Library: Last week students were given a pink slip of paper listing all their check-outs that are overdue or coming due this Thursday, Nov. 20. Please help them look for them at home.  If there are discrepancies (i.e., you know for certain that a title listed is NOT at home), please let us know with a note to school or an email to Mrs. Robinson. (n.robinson@immanuelchristianschool.net).

Battle of the Books: Our readers have been doing a great job reading through their list of 10 books! In order to be finished by early February, our goal is to have read and made questions for a book every 2 weeks. Check on your child’s progress with him/her. It would be great to have a parent act as a coach for one of the teams. We have the question-making process well in hand. We especially need someone to work with the team during lunch and/or snack recess, once a week from February to April. Interested? Contact Mrs. R.
