December 3rd Journal

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2014

Mission:  The mission of Immanuel Christian School is to prepare students to meet the challenge of the world and culture they live in as young and growing Christians.  Thus, students are taught the skill of discernment in the light of God’s Word, the practice of stewardship for creation, the required commitment to a life of Christian service, and the beauty of witness through modeling God’s love in a broken world.

From the Principal’s Desk:

We have lots of information in this week’s Journal as we’ve hit the start of Advent, and many have begun planning into the coming year… please read it carefully!

This morning at chapel we concluded our school focus “week” on Protectors, with student skits presenting how we can appear strong and courageous and how we can be courageous in non-violent defence of one another. Using the parable of the Good Samaritan, we call our students to be courageous Alongside Standers, in the classrooms, in the halls, in the washrooms and on the playground. We learned that in the same way that one of God’s names is Lord our Shield (Jehovah Magen, Ps 28), we also are called to shield others. This is the heart of our Protectors Anti-Bullying program. It is not easy to step forward in the face of injustice, but we learned how powerful the actions of one or two bystanders can be. Now it is time to do this, and to celebrate those who do the right thing!

yours in Christ, Keith Cameron, Principal

Journey with Jesus.jpgADDITIONAL SHOWING! Christmas Presentation - Journey with Jesus: Mark Monday, December 15 at 7 pm and Tuesday, December 16 at 10 am on your calendars! In this school-wide project, students have examined different topics to have an understanding about the life of Jesus. What did Jesus wear? Which buildings did Jesus know? Who is in Jesus’ family? How did Jesus travel? What work did Jesus do? We will create a school-wide presentation for the Christmas program to take the community on a “Journey with Jesus” inside our school, with our grade 8s as “character hosts”.
Each classroom will be transformed into a biblical setting according to their topic as students present their work through props, costumes, artwork, written pieces, etc. Due to a limit on tour group size (classes are only so big), you need to reserve tickets - please click on www.goo.gl/D4CQhc or call the office soon! Tickets will be sent home on Weds Dec 10.

SMALL IMAGE (PNG)Public DomainHot lunch:  Wed. Dec 17 will be a Subway lunch.  This is new to ICS and we'd like to give it a try. The subs are 6 inches in length and come in turkey, ham or roast beef.  They each come with cheese.  Each student can fill out the form for what they would like on their sub. If they would like more than one 6 inch sub, please fill out an additional form.  They come individually wrapped and labelled from Subway.  Enjoy! Prices are $2.50 for ham and 2.75 for turkey or roast beef.  We will serve juice boxes with this meal but no ice cream this time. Forms are at the back of the journal.

File:Drama-film-stub-icon.pngThe Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe: Woodstock Christian School has invited our students in grades 5-8 to a matinee performance of "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" on Wednesday, December 10 at 10:00 a.m. Parents are welcome to attend as chaperones - please let the office know! Service Projects for this Christmas Season
Food Drive for the Corner Cupboard: This week is the start of the collection of non-perishable food under the decorated Christmas tree that will be in the front hall. These items will be picked up by the Corner Cupboard and will be distributed to needy families at Christmas time. Please help us by picking up a few extra items with your weekly groceries and send them to school with your child(ren)
Hat/Mittens/Socks for the Optimist Club: We will try to bless the less fortunate in our community by collecting new hats, mittens or socks to put under the tree. The Optimist Club works together with the Corner Cupboard. They both appreciate our school being involved in this project as well. Thank you!

The Sweets Treats and Treasures sale was a good success again this year with our profit coming in around $1300.00!  We'd like to thank Alec Saarloos, Esther Kroondyk and Janny Kroondyk for donating the Dutch meatball soup.  Thanks too to Irene Versteggen-Buis and Tammy Vannoord for making Christmas pots for us to sell.  Many thanks to our school families who donated baking and to all the  students who helped with the games area and babysitting.

Transportation note: Transportation Committee would like to ensure that everyone is aware that if there is a bus cancellation due to snow or fog the bus drivers will be contacting the entire list. When there is a bus breakdown we will then utilize the Call List and the people in bold will be required to call their list. In terms of actual snow calls, we follow Southwest Transportation Services (http://www.mybigyellowbus.ca/), we do encourage everyone to utilize this website to determine school cancellations. Also please sign up for Facebook and Twitter for notifications of any bus disruptions.

Transportation Job Opportunity: The Transportation Committee is looking for applications for a spare bus driver. Applicants should ideally have a B-license and a clean driving record. If accepted, ICS would cover medical certification. If interested, or you know of someone who is interested, please let the office or our Tpt Chair, Jim Vording, know.

Derrick Drover - One of our music teachers, is holding a Christmas Concert (with his band) at the Richmond United Church on Friday, Dec.5th at 7 p.m. in Richmond.  All are welcome to enjoy an evening of praise and worship celebrating the Christmas season.

I appreciate hearing if your child’s pink “overdue” slip doesn’t match what you can find at home. A note is a helpful conversation-starter here at school.
