June 10th, 2015 Journal

Wednesday, June 10th, 2015

Mission:  The mission of Immanuel Christian School is to prepare students to meet the challenge of the world and culture they live in as young and growing Christians.  Thus, students are taught the skill of discernment in the light of God’s Word, the practice of stewardship for creation, the required commitment to a life of Christian service, and the beauty of witness through modeling God’s love in a broken world.

From the Principal’s Desk:

We approach the end of our school year next week with a report writing PA Day on Monday, our Awards Assembly on Tuesday at 2 pm (you are invited!), Accelerated Reader reward sundaes, graduation practices, and then the whole-school Graduation on Monday Jun 22 at 7:30 pm. Wow, time certainly flies! But, think of how your children have grown, in body, mind and soul, since September. Perhaps we have too? We praise God for that growth and His work in us all!

Last Friday we concluded our “Who Discovered Math” integrated multi-age study. As staff and parents, we sometimes wrestle with unconventional teaching. Is it worth the time and effort? Is there academic value for mixed ages? On the flip side, at ICS we have opportunities to be creative in teaching, and to develop Christian character and broaden gifts in our students. We have seen young students’ eyes light up considering that “IV” and “4” represent the same number! We have seen grade 7 / 8 students to ask their mentor teacher to step back and give them more space to lead and teach! We have some unexpected leaders emerge in the mixed-grade family groupings, in teaching or caring roles.  We aim for excellence in education through both our basic skills and our breadth.

New Families: Welcome to Nathan and Valerie Bokma with Cameron (JK)! For next year’s enrolment, we are now at 8 of 8 families (115 students so far) with others still possible! Let us be thankful, and also bold, as we pray for families to replace our departing families as well!

in Christ, Keith Cameron

Praying for our families: Please join our staff as we pray for Abe & Margaret Fehr and Frank & Rose Fehr.
Praying for our staff: Please pray for our bookkeeper Mrs. Teresa Janssen

REMINDERS:

Thu Jun 11 - Mrs Walters’ afternoon route is cancelled

Tuition Reduction Incentive Program (TRIP): Last order of the year due tomorrow and delivery on June 18th. The TRIP year end was May 31. After calculating the figures, the profit raised  from this gift card program for this year is $23,513. Half of this profit is designated for Fundraising. The other half is tuition credits for families who have purchased gift cards (40%) and administration (10%). Thank you so much to those who participated in this program this year. Theressa deJong and Grace Schipper TRIP coordinators.

Original (2270 × 1602)Cheese orders: The next order will be sent out with the last Journal on June 17th and delivery will be the first Wednesday of the new school year.
Mrs. Keli-Lyn Lockyer currently handles the ordering and delivery of our cheese orders each month. She will be looking for a helper for the 2015-16 school year. This would go towards completing you G.I.F.T.S hours. If you can help please contact the office.

ICS Fundraising Committee - is proud to announce that we are almost there!  To date $69,170.18 has been raised, so that means there is $10,829.82 until we reach the annual fundraising goal of $80,000!  Praise the Lord for all the blessings He bestows upon us year after year, and for the talented individuals He brings forward to do the work!  We welcome our new committee members: Rose Fehr, Tina Hiebert and Chris Hiemstra and thank our outgoing members for their dedication: Bobbie Jo Bennett, Grace Miedema, Janine Shelton and Jacklyn Versnick.
       - the ICS Fundraising Committee:  Chris Bakker, Rose Fehr, Tina Hiebert, Chris Hiemstra, Keith Sinke and Janina Dykxhoorn

Custodian Update: We are pleased to announce that Angie Bergen has been selected as our new custodian! She is a familiar parent in our school community, and she has experience in the custodial area. She has been noted to be thorough, reliable, with a keen eye for detail, and she should be well-placed to continue to uphold our high standard of cleanliness at ICS! Mrs Justina Bergen, Angie's mother-in-law, will continue to assist with duties as required (as has been the case with Helen for the last few months). It is envisioned that Mrs Helen Friesen will complete a handover with Angie over the week of June 15-19, with Angie assuming all duties no later than 1 July. We thank both Helen Friesen and Lydia Bergen very much for their work over the last 2 years, and bid them God's blessing as they embark on other employment or fostering.

Music Specialist Farewell. Please note that Ms Caroline Heo respectfully declined an offer to continue in her part-time music position for gr 3-8. She emphasized that she would miss her students, but that the small percentage made commuting costly, and did not allow her enough certainty to settle closer. Ms Heo has certainly brought talent to the ICS music program, introducing more hands-on music for all grades. She also covered History and Geography at the gr 7/8 level in Mr TenBruggencate’s absence. We will wish her God's blessings as she seeks other opportunities where her gifts can be employed.

Music Specialist Sought. Part-time position (4-7 periods weekly) runs from 15 August 2015 to 30 June 2016. Evidence of successful music teaching experience, including instrumental band is required. Ontario College of Teachers certification required, Christian School Teacher’s Certificate preferred. Please forward a resume, philosophy of Christian education, evidence of successful teaching and references to Ms Marianne Pieters by Jun 17.

CameraPhotos for sale: The promotions committee will be selling the current 11x14 photos
