From the Principal’s Desk:
Track and field is a hot topic when you have to reschedule! We had calendar issues earlier, and weather issues this week - thank-you for your graciousness as a community. With challenges, frustrations, wins and losses, determination and training, sport can be used as an analogy of the Christian life. An oft-quoted verse is 2 Corinthians 9:24 - “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.” In chapel this morning we watched the inspirational video of Heather Dorniden, a college runner in 2008, as she fell during a critical race. She is quoted after the race as declaring, “I feel like the Lord just filled me up and gave me the opportunity to show what amazing things can happen through Him.”
God works amazing things through all of us, and those things are not always what may be seen to be as great as this race, but goodness and grace in everyday events are no less amazing. Along those lines, I want to acknowledge two families who graciously topped up our long jump pits with sand on their own initiative, another family who in a discussion on kitchen improvements, volunteered to donate the needed countertop upgrade! There are other events like these on a frequent basis - it is a blessing to be in the ICS community as God works through each of us!

We have clovermead passes available for the adventure farm again!! The farm opens June 1, make sure to get your passes from TRIP! You'll save the tax and help out yourself and the school!!

 We are still seeking 2+ new ICS families for 2017-2018! I have had many family interviews over the past few weeks, but no enrolments yet… Pray… Spread the word… offer a no-obligation tour!

Membership Meeting Recap - Thank you for attending last week's Spring Membership Meeting! We picked up some fresh perspective from Justin Cook from OACS and took care of school business, including approval of the budget for the upcoming 2017/18 school year. Membership renewal for 2017/18 can be done now at the school office. If you have any questions regarding Membership, Membership Meetings and the process of becoming more involved in YOUR school, please email j.versnick@immanuelchristianschool.net.
We are looking for:
- An occasional handyman. We maintain a list of minor building faults, most of which require a bit of time, a few tools and a bit of know-how. Fixing small things promptly can save us big repairs later on. Do you know someone (maybe partially retired) able to commit 1-2 hours weekly at ICS? Please let Mr Cameron know!
- A source of clean topsoil. Our soccer goals are getting hollowed out and need some topsoil and grass seed. Again, if you can deliver some topsoil, we can save on playground maintenance!
- Minor painting volunteers over the summer. Can you help with minor touch-ups over the summer months? Doorways, doors, playground lines can all be touched up…. Waiting longer means a much bigger job!
Yearbook Advertising: You still have a chance to advertise your business in our yearbook, please contact the office. Ad costs: Business Card $40, 1/4 page $60, 1/2 page $100, Full page $160 and inside cover is $300.
Transportation Update - as briefed at the membership meeting, we did not have enough families who were able to jump off the bus for next year to offer a tuition rebate. We are looking at options for a small bus replacement this summer and we appreciate the good work done to date on scheduling - thank-you Transport Committee!
The Promotions committee would like to extend a huge thank you to all the families that come out on Saturday for the 150th parade and helped to fill our Birthday Bus! It was a great time spent with our school families while representing ICS with our presences in Aylmer. A very special thank you goes out to Mrs. Tesselaar for escorting the Birthday Bus along the parade route. It was truly a great time.
The ICS Golf Tournament has one opening as we have had one team that is not able to attend. If you would like to enter a team, please contact Jeff Vannoord today @ 519-520-0943. For all those already registered, please be advised that we will be holding a Silent Action on the day of the tournament. The following items will be available for auction:

Exciting Surprise: First thing Tuesday morning as the students were coming in I heard Roenan excitedly say, “Ms. Pieters the butterfly hatched!” Hollis had brought this chrysalis to school in September. The students all gathered around to watch how the tiny butterfly’s wings started to grow as it pumped the blood into its wings. It was a beautiful miracle the Lord created. Now we are eagerly watching Elaina’s chrysalis. We’re hoping her chrysalis will soon reveal a beautiful swallowtail butterfly also.

Math: We are wrapping up our time unit. Grade 2’s should be able to read digital and analogue clocks, to the nearest 5 minutes. Students are working hard to remember that “quarter to 5” and “4:45” are the same time.
Grade 3’s have been working hard on elapsed time: How much time has passed from 5:45-9:25?
Creation Studies: We have come to truly love our country during our Canadian Symbols and Celebrations Unit. Students completed their final quiz and assignment for the unit today.
Our next unit examines the animal kingdom! To kick start our unit, students are asked to bring in a symbol and 3 clues (Green Sheet) that describes their animal. For example: My symbol may be a pair of glasses. Clue #1: I am found on every continent except Antarctica. Clue #2 I have wings. Clue #3 I like to fly about at night and can see very well.
Homework: Symbol and Clues need to be brought in on Wednesday, May 24.
Library: Library class tomorrow. Remember to return your books!

Music: BRING YOUR INSTRUMENT TO SCHOOL - every Monday and Wednesday! We are preparing for the Music Festival at Canada’s Wonderland on June 2! Permission forms for Canada’s Wonderland went home today.
June 8th-9th Canoe Trip Training: Our training session is on Friday May 26. For the swim test, we depart for the YMCA at 9:30 am, returning at 11:30. With or without a lifejacket, all students need to complete: a rolling entry (backwards or forward) into deep water, tread water for 1 minute, swim 50m continuously any stroke. To pass a gear check that day, students must bring in the “canoe bag” that they plan to bring with them on the water, including a set of dry clothes in a waterproof bag, rain gear, water bottle, hat and sunscreen.
