 The Journal

September 19, 2012

Mission:  The mission of Immanuel Christian School is to prepare students to meet the challenge of the world and culture they live in as young and growing Christians.  Thus, students are taught the skill of discernment in the light of God’s Word, the practice of stewardship for creation, the required commitment to a life of Christian service, and the beauty of witness through modeling God’s love in a broken world.

From the Principal's Desk:

Well, this year has certainly started with excitement – some the kind we’d seek, and some not…!  In successes (like the energy of the first week back), and in setbacks (like Mr T’s recent accident), I am reminded of the call not to be anxious about anything, but, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, to present my requests to God (Phil 4:6).

We are thankful to welcome Darrel and Helen Klassen (Seth, gr 4; Devon gr 2; and Jedediah, SK) to Immanuel!  The Klassen family come to us following the tragic death of their 2-year-old daughter Charity, in an accident this past July.  They see in us a Christian school able to provide a much-needed, temporary break from their homeschooling.  Please make them feel welcome into our community for the whole time that they will be with us!

Update on Mr T:  As you may be aware, Mr Evert TenBruggencate was struck by a car while cycling in St Thomas on Sep 10.  He has undergone successful surgery for serious injuries to his left knee and is now at home.  His leg will be immobilized for 6 weeks, after which he hopes to commence extensive physio to regain strength and range of motion.  We pray for God's healing hand with Mr T.  Ms. Katrina Jones has been on our supply list since 2011, and thankfully, she has committed to be our replacement teacher until Mr T is able to return to school.  Please welcome her as a member of our staff, and encourage her in her work with our children.

in Christ,
//Keith Cameron//

Praying For Our Families:   Last week Thursday we prayed Dave & Angie Bergen, Jake & Lydia Bergen.
Praying For Our Staff:  This week we will pray for Ms. Pieters.

FROM THE CLASSROOMS:
School-wide memory work:  We began the Protectors Freedom from Bullying program in our weekly chapel last week.  This is an area of continual growth, as we acknowledge our fallen nature, and as we seek to educate young and growing Christians.   This week we will look at Jesus's actions demonstrating that self defence and protecting others is not revenge.  Memory work for Wed 25 Sep is from John 18:23:
“If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”

Students should be prepared to enjoy an outdoor activity at the safety village.
Reading Buddies: All grades 1/2 students have been match up with a reading buddy from the Grades 7/8 classroom.  Every Thursday morning at the start of school the students get together to read and do A.R. Quizzes.
Accelerated Reader Program: Grades 1/2 students have been given what level books he/she may read from our school library. Please encourage your child to read their A.R. books each week and do the quizzes on the computer. It is good to have your child practice reading out loud at home to help them with their fluency and comprehension. The goal for students in Grades 1/2 is to read and do A.R. quizzes weekly.  All the grade one students took home books for the A.R. program marked with a pink happy face sticker on the spine of the books. Here is how you can help your child begin this program: first look at the pictures and ask your child what the book may be about, next read the book to your child, then read the book aloud pointing to the words and having your child read along with you and finally have your child try to read it to you. This process should be done over several days so your child will start to recognize the words in the book. Check to see if your child has comprehended what was read by asking them some questions about the story. Have your child take the book to school with a note indicating that he/she is ready to do an A.R. quiz on the book. The computer program will ask your child five or ten comprehension questions about the book that was read. Parents please call if you have any questions or come in after school some time to see how the program works.
