Spring
and warmer weather is here! At school, our junior maintenance team has planted
grass on the soccer field, students are playing baseball and ball hockey at
recess, short sleeves are in, gym class is directed towards track and field
practices, and yesterday the first of our chicks were hatching in the JK/SK
room! We rejoice in the changing of the seasons, and this season after Easter
does bring a promise of new life and hope! This is a great week to celebrate
Christian education here at Immanuel, whether at Grace Community
Church last Sunday, at
our chapel and Open House this morning, or Aylmer CRC this coming Sunday. We
praise God for the gift of Christian education for our children, and as a
community we seek to sustain and strengthen it for future
generations!
As the days warm, we find that
we also need to pay new attention to our dress code. Our current
dress code, represented in the Parent Handbook, states:
Immanuel has no formal dress code. We ask
that each Christian home use good judgement in what the student wears.
Some principles for choosing student dress should be comfort,
wear-ability, neatness, and modesty. Our female students are expected to
wear tops that cover midriffs and have straps that are at least three fingers
wide. Students and teachers should try to project an image of good taste
for both themselves and the school.
Our code needs to be a guide towards good judgement
rather than a set of rigid rules, but we also need to be responsive to changing
fashions. Shorter shorts are our current challenge for girls, while visible
undergarments are sometimes an issue for boys. Along with Ms. Jones,
I will be engaging our grade 7/8 girls in a discussion on appropriate
school attire including shortness of shorts, fit and image when we sit down,
and sheer fabric tops as our current topics. We will refine our guidance in
these areas, and parental thoughts in this area are welcome. Please be in conversation with your children,
as we together seek to prompt discernment in the area of beauty and
modesty. Lastly, in the interest of keeping the school clean, and our students
safely attired, please check that your child has a set of indoor shoes
(suitable for gym class) at school to change into.

Praying
for our Families:
Last week we prayed for Jacklyn & Dustin Versnick, and Jason &
Carrie Vis.
Praying
for our Staff: This
week we will pray for Mrs. VanderHoek.
We extend our Christian sympathy to John and Theresa VanderDeen, and
their children Emily, Randy,
Katie and Ben (gr. 7)in the passing away of John’s brother, Richard VanderDeen from Strathroy
after dealing
with cancer for the last year.
May God provide comfort and healing to the VanderDeen family and
extended family
as they deal with the loss of a sibling at the young age of 51.
Update on CEAF:
reprint excerpts from latest parent memo...
From: Julius de Jager, OACS Executive Director
The waiting is over. After considering the matter
since March 21, the Canadian Revenue Agency has responded regarding the status
of donations made to CEAF’s School Support Program.
At 3:30 pm on Friday, April 19, the OACS received a
copy of a template response written by CRA which they sent initially to our
Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC) contact. This template response letter is the
one CRA intends to send directly to all CEAF parent donors. We have been
informed that CRA will begin mailing these letters this week.
Please note that the letter that CRA will be
sending to donors is not a
Letter of Reassessment; it is
merely the CRA’s stated intention of how they plan to respond to the matter. No response to this letter is required by parent
donors. A formal Letter of
Reassessment from CRA will be coming later. When
that letter arrives, the OACS intends to have a recommended response ready for
the donors.
The template letter re-states that that CRA does
not accept that the charitable donation receipts issued by CEAF are legitimate.
It continues to contend that these donations are not charitable gifts as
defined by CRA. CRA has dropped its reference to donations made in the 2009 tax
year - something we suspected would happen as the three year window of review
is rapidly closing for CRA. However, CRA will be adding the donations made to
CEAF in tax years 2011 and 2012.
I have called for a meeting of the OACS Advisory
Committee on Tuesday to review the template letter and to craft our advice to
parent donors and their schools. We anticipate that we will be communicating
with you, parent donors and school leaders, later this week regarding our
advice in dealing with the letters.
Thank you for your support and confidence in the
OACS thus far. Please pray for us as we seek wisdom in determining our next
steps in this complex matter.
School Tips for Parents: This will be a new occasional
feature, with tips from the Principal, teachers or parents. Our first edition
will focus on social media.
Teaching
"tech" to our children has brought me an increased awareness of our
children's knowledge, habits and discernment with information technology and
social media. Wondering about internet safety, social media, good habits? A
great resource is: http://www.commonsensemedia.org/.
It is worth subscribing to! Check out this month's tips::
-
talking to your children about the news: how do we talk about the
Boston Marathon bombings, for example?
-
the release of Facebook Home for mobile phones, the "always on"
social experience "designed to put friends above everything else."
So, is this a good thing for teens who want to stay connected to their friends?
Or will it make it more difficult for teens to experience meaningful
connections with friends and family face to face?
Board Update: The board met Wednesday April 17 with our newly-elected board members. Our new board executive was elected. Serving us are Chris Hiemstra as Chair, Eric Hartemink as Vice Chair, Jane Weverink as Secretary and Dave VanGurp as Treasurer. Our board meets on the third Wednesday of each month, and board minutes are published on our website at: http://www.immanuelchristianschool.net/boardminutes.htm.
Education Committee Update: Education Committee
reports to our Principal, and is the opportunity for parents to be directly
involved in the educational discussions and decisions in our school. Priorities
for next year include: focusing on innovation in arts, sports, music, and
drama; enhancing school spirit; and policy review. Following 3 years of
faithful service, we bid good-bye to Emily Schuurman and Georgie Rodenburg. Ed committee is seeking 2 replacements - we
have some people in mind, but if interested, please speak to Emily Schuurman.
Welcome to Mrs. Lydia Bergen as
she starts her new Janitor position today.

Turn-off-the-Screens Week
Wrap-up
from Penny Hilliker, Coordinator of the program: Congratulations to all who
participated in Turn Off the Screens Week events from April 21 - 27,
2013. We had a very successful week, with events attracting from a
handful to a big crowd of active participants, and many more found their own
creative ways to be active and reduce screen time. Many families
commented on how seriously their children took the "no screens"
part. Schools are collecting returned log sheets this week, with some
prize draws being held at the school level.
Thanks to all our community partners for hosting events, including the East Elgin Community Complex, the EECC Youth Horseshoes Club,Assumption
