June 5th Journal

The ICS Journal

                                     Thursday, June 5, 2014

Mission:  The mission of Immanuel Christian School is to prepare students to meet the challenge of the world and culture they live in as young and growing Christians.  Thus, students are taught the skill of discernment in the light of God’s Word, the practice of stewardship for creation, the required commitment to a life of Christian service, and the beauty of witness through modeling God’s love in a broken world.

From the Principal’s Desk:

Congratulations to all our competitors at yesterday’s District Track and Field! Whether achieving a personal best under pressure, or placing, there is great value in friendly competition. Many of our parents also find this a great time of reconnection with family and friends as well. A special thanks to all who helped out at the food booth, and especially the Ladies Auxiliary who work throughout the year in supporting ICS!

Thriving is aiming in the right direction to fully employ the time, talent and finances with which God has blessed us as a school! Part of “thriving” at ICS means continually reflecting on what we do, where we need to preserve what we are doing, and where we need to change. Thriving does not mean perfect by any means, in fact it means that we will make mistakes, and that we will learn from both successes and mistakes in the interests of a healthy, vibrant school and community. In all this, we acknowledge God’s hand in sustaining his school.

I wanted to give you an exciting update on how we are looking to thrive in our math program. Over the last 2 years, we have implemented the online Mathletics program for K-8. We have also grown increasingly dissatisfied with the lack of depth and practice in our curriculum resources for 1-6, especially in the area of computation. This concern reflects a much wider public concern that math teaching is being done much less well than it should be, with so much language that basic skills get lost. After review, we are pleased to announce a trial purchase of Singapore Math resources in K-2 for next year. Singapore Math is a well-reputed, academically rigorous program which has gained considerable following across North America in recent years. Mrs Groeneweg and Ms Pieters are excited to use these materials in their classes over the next year, and help evaluate their suitability for a complete K-6 implementation.

From TRIP: Because the tuition is structured differently for the next school year, we have to close our TRIP year a month early May 31. ‎ This means that next TRIP year will have 13 months. Our last monthly order for this school year is going out with the Journal this week.  Orders are due by next Thursday June 12 with pickup on June 19. A reminder to you that, in accordance with Revenue Canada rules, 40% of your profit is delegated to your personal TRIP credit. 50% goes to the ICS Fundraising budget, while 10% covers costs. As always, No Frills and Tim Horton gift cards will be available at Roszells, Clovermead and Family Flowers for the summer. We will have some of the other gift cards in stock. Universal Bursary Program and Registration: We are asking all parents to confirm their intent to register for 2014-2015, and their intent to apply to the bursary, by June 30 (earlier is better). 13 of our families have already completed this process! Are you among them? A hard copy of the form is enclosed with this Journal, or you may use the shortcut link at: http://goo.gl/4dO2EG. Our bookkeeper, Teresa, will be sending out tuition invoices as soon as the Tuition Reduction Incentive Plan (TRIP gift cards) profits are tabulated. Do you have questions? Please speak to Keith or Cliff, our new Treasurer. We are excited and we praise God for next year’s enrolment, with potentially 94 students, including 10 JK, 13 SK and 7 new families!

MSCU: Attached to today’s Journal is a flyer from the Mennonite Savings Credit Union, where our school account is presently.  While parents make their own investment decisions, you may be interested in their GIC ‘Church Builder’ opportunity.  As a charity, the interest can also be attributed to ICS.

From the Library:
1. Since the library will be closed for checkouts after June 5, students need to bring books from home to use for silent reading time.

3. INVENTORY help is appreciated!  Times: Mon June 9: 9-3, Weds June 11: 9-4, Thu June 12: 9-4
4. As I remove older books from our collection, I am adding them to the book cart in the hall. If you see a favourite you can't bear to part with, help yourself (25 cent donation per item)
Please remember to check shelves and bags at home for due/overdue library books.  All students were given a blue slip on Monday to serve as a reminder of books they have checked out of the ICS library. Everything should be returned by this week Thursday (June 5).  If you find ICS books at home that do not appear on your child's list, we would be happy to have them back, no questions asked.

Volunteer Opportunities 2014-2015:
1. Grocery Tapes: We are looking for someone to take care of tabulating our grocery tape receipts and bringing them in for a refund.  This helps with your volunteer hours commitment. Please contact the office.
2. Breakfast Program: Jodie Hibbert and Carrie Rempel have done a great job starting this new program out - thanks so much! We need one new volunteer to come on board for next year, joining Carrie. Responsibilities include snack menu planning, shopping, tracking receipts and supervision of the student service team. With well-trained, eager students, you might only need to be at ICS in the morning briefly, twice a week.
