April 22nd, 2015 Journal

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2015

Mission:  The mission of Immanuel Christian School is to prepare students to meet the challenge of the world and culture they live in as young and growing Christians.  Thus, students are taught the skill of discernment in the light of God’s Word, the practice of stewardship for creation, the required commitment to a life of Christian service, and the beauty of witness through modeling God’s love in a broken world.

From the Principal’s Desk:

You are invited! On behalf of our Board, I’d like to extend an invite to (and may I say, suggest!) our Spring Membership Meeting next Wednesday evening at 8 pm. This is a time to hear from our Board, to vote to affirm 3 new Board members, and to affirm our budget (and consequently next year’s tuition). This is also a time to grow as a community. We have invited Ken VanMinnen, Principal of Strathroy Community Christian to share on thriving Christian education in a different community… and, we have food! Our Ladies’ Auxiliary is pleased to announce that SPECIAL SUPREME SUNDAES will be served at break! All are welcome. As a Christian organization, it is important that we “not give up meeting together... but encourage one another” (after Heb 10:25). You need to be a school society member in good standing to vote (members simply fill out an application indicating their commitment to ICS and their agreement with our statement of faith). Fees are only $25 per person, and membership applications are available at the office. What’s a SPECIAL SUPREME SUNDAE? Come and find out!

yours in Christian education, Keith Cameron, Principal

District PA Day this Friday. Research in education has clearly shown the importance of focusing intentionally on students’ mindsets—their sense of belonging, engagement, and commitment to growth in learning through effort. Perhaps our mindsets as teachers are as important as the mindsets of our students. With Justin Cook from the Ontario Alliance of Christian Schools leading, our teachers will foster growth mindsets that empower our students and each other as learners in our communities.

"Bring Your Parents to School Day" is coming up as part of our Spring Open House on Wed, May 6th as part of Christian Education week at ICS. The morning offers you the opportunity to take part in your children's school morning. The morning starts with chapel at 8:50, followed by classroom visits until morning recess. We would like also to invite those that are interested in learning more about ICS to come for a visit. We hope to see you there! If you need a note for the bus, please see below!

Bus Note for Parents

Grade 2/3 and Music Teacher Sought!
We are pleased to announce a vacancy for a full-time position teaching grades 2/3 and rotary music for grades 2 through 8. Position term runs from 15 August 2015 to 30 June 2016, with the possibility of a follow-on permanent position. Formal music teaching qualifications, including instrumental band, are preferred. Evidence of successful music teaching experience is also acceptable. Ontario College of Teachers certification required, Christian School Teacher’s Certificate preferred. Please forward a resume, a statement of your philosophy of Christian education, evidence of successful classroom teaching and references including a pastoral reference by 15 May 2015.
Please pass this on if you know of someone interested!

The ICS Spring Membership Meeting will be held on Wednesday April 29th at 8:00pm in the gym. Agendas and a special letter were attached to last week’s Journal. Come out and get informed as to what is happening with your school and socialize with other parents. For members without children here, your agenda will either be mailed or placed in your church mailbox. Volunteer hours: Did you know that when you attend a membership meeting it counts for 2 hours towards your volunteer time?

2015 New Registration - With plans for an additional teacher, all grades continue to be open! Parents of JK and SK children step into school at ICS with tuition at 40% and 60% of full tuition respectively. Our board continues to support our New to Christian Education Incentive which allows parents of older children to step into Christian schooling at the same rates - 40% the first year, 60% the second, family tuition thereafter. This allows all to “taste and see” how good Immanuel can be! Please spread the word!

Turn Off the Screens Week: This is an excellent, fitness-oriented week with great community support.
On average, Canadian children spend 4-6 hours a day viewing screens. That is a lot of time sitting down and being inactive! Experts recommend that children and youth should view screens no more than 2 hours per day. A log sheet is attached to the end of the Journal. Sheets need to be turned into your child’s homeroom teacher to be entered in a draw for a participation prize!

Memory Work: for Wed. April 29 Sandy Land
Don’t build your house on the sandy land; don’t build it too near the shore.
Well it might look kind of nice, but you’ll have to build it twice;

You’d better build your house upon the rock. Make a good foundation on a solid spot.
Oh, the storms may come and go, but the peace of God you will know.

Science: Why are birds so amazing? From Just For Kids - The Banner,  May, 2013
Birds are everywhere in the Bible! According to Genesis 1, God created birds even before other animals and people. Later, Noah sent out a raven and a dove to see if the flood waters were going down.  After the Israelites left Egypt, God sent them quail in the desert to keep them form starving. When the prophet Elijah was scared and hungry, God told some ravens to bring him food. And the Holy Spirit appeared in the form of a dove Don’t you wonder why God chose a dove and not another animal or bird? Birds live in every country on earth-even in Antarctica! Wow!
We are learning about how our Creator, God, cares for birds, and about how he trusts us to care for them. We are learning about their variety, that they live everywhere in the world, and that they are uniquely designed for living in their many different habitats. We have classified birds into groups: Water Birds, Marsh and Shore Birds, Birds of Prey, Perching Birds and Ground Birds. Now we are getting ready to choose one bird to research for an upcoming Bird Project. *Students will be bringing a Project Outline home tomorrow, Apr. 23. Parents, please review your child’s Project Outline together with your child. Further details will be included in next week’s Journal. Thank you.

The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[c] in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me.
