From the Principal’s Desk:
We are blessed to be a part of the larger OACS family (that’s the Ontario Alliance of Christian Schools). The Convention last week was a chance for our staff to worship, meet and learn. This year’s keynote speakers were Steven and Joanna Levy, Christian educators closely associated with a US movement called Expeditionary Learning. Ideas are best shared by stories, and borrowing from our OACS Communicator (http://www.oacs.org/2016/leading-with-love/), let me share two examples:
Steven: It’s really important to both of us that educators provide opportunities in daily school life for students to engage with God, and the work of His kingdom,  while growing in Christ-likeness. One of the most exciting projects that I did with a class was with a group of grade four students in the school community of Lexington, Massachusetts.  The students were pretty well-off materially in this town, but they suffered from a different kind of poverty—I called it the poverty of gratitude. So one year, I wrote a letter to each of the students over the summer and invited them to come to school on the first day with a map of what they thought the ideal classroom could look like. When they arrived, their classroom was empty. There was nothing there for them—not even desks. So anything they wanted to have in the classroom they were going to have to work for. The challenge was to find a way to fund and then build their ideal classroom. And it was my challenge, as a teacher, to help them solve the problem while at the same time teaching them the content they needed to learn.
Joanna: Each year, our students participate in an exhibition—a long term project—and we try to focus on both academic learning and also character and spiritual formation of the students while they learn. For example, this year our 6th grade class is learning about how people become what they worship. The students are examining how they are spending their time by keeping a log of their activities each weekend. The end product is going to be a magazine that other middle school students can use for their own self reflection about current cultural idols, and what they can lead to. It’s about encouraging kids to put God first in their lives. I’m really excited about this project because I think that looking at the idols in our current culture is really important. And unless you step back and look at them, they will take you over and form your desires and lead you down paths that you really don’t want to go on.
Over this year, as our Board reflects on vision, as your teachers and I craft our educational goals, let’s be in prayer and conversation of what “an excellent elementary program and a focus on Christian character growth” could be here at ICS!

REMINDERS:
Tuition Reduction Incentive Plan (T.R.I.P): Order attached Nov 2nd, due on the 10th with pickup on the 17th.

Spontaneity Run! What is that? Well, it’s a sudden idea we had to promote school family spirit, fitness, and to burn off some post-Halloween energy. On Tuesday, student school families (JK-8 groups) ran laps of our playground, earning team points for each lap. The winning school family gets to sit on chairs (like the guests and teachers) at the next school chapel!

Volleyball: For boys and girls, our tournament date is set as Friday Nov 25 at LDCSS. Players, please check your schedules (especially hockey!) and let your coach know of any potential conflicts. The girls’ team sends a “thank-you” to cross-fit owner and parent Mr Steve Atkinson for our “6 minute” killer workout with only volleyballs last practice!

Remembrance Day: Next week Friday, we are joining with the Aylmer public in remembering and retelling our national experiences with conflict. Parents, please send some change for poppies. You are welcome to join gr 1-8 classes as they walk to the Aylmer cenotaph and join the ceremony - let us know if you can help! We depart ICS by foot at 10:15. Dress warmly and appropriately - we go rain, shine or cold!

#ChristianCommunityValues. What’s this? Check out our Twitter feed (repeated on our website)  to see what Promotions Committee had for our grandparents to “tweet” last week! Parents, stay tuned for your chance coming up!

Electives: Do you have a special talent you can share with our student body? Electives are a 5 week unit for grades 4-8 in late January to early February. In the past we have included activities such as Woodworking, Cooking & Baking, Badminton, Computers, Small Engines, Cake Decorating, Curling and others. If you can help, please contact the office.

  • Since we were not at school last week, all books signed out at our last Library class will be due this week. To help you in your search, earlier this week students were given a yellow slip with the list of all books overdue or due this Thursday. Please RETURN or RENEW anything on the list. If you notice an error (i.e., it appears on the slip but you think it was returned) please bring it to Mrs. Robinson’s attention. .
  • A public Library card and your PIN will give you online access to the catalogue as well as databases that we do not subscribe to. Signing up for a card gives you access to all these resources from your home computer!
  • Books 4 Eternity: In order to give you access to Christian books as a balance to Scholastic offerings, we recently hosted a display from Living Books (Tina Vyn) and that catalogue was sent home. Attached to this week’s Journal is another catalogue, this time from a company called Books 4 Eternity. This is a different selection of titles that may interest you and your family. If you would like to order something, please send in the form and payment info (note that there are various options) to the school office or library by Thursday, Nov. 17. The Library will receive a percentage of the total purchase amount to add to our collection.

Wed. Nov. 9: Memory Work: Poem - In Flanders Fields (first part)
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
