From the Principal’s Desk:
Poppy, Orange Poppy, Red Poppy ...As a former soldier with 20 years service in the Canadian Military Engineers I have walked through burnt out towns with racist graffiti on the walls. At times, I have been under threat from mines, bombs and disease. My graduating class from military college has suffered three deaths in active duty, one in a submarine fire, one in a Snowbird crash, and one in combat in Afghanistan. I can “remember” from experience, but I’ve wondered how our students “remember.”
“What do these stones mean?” was the question we dealt with last year in our school theme. Joshua had set up a monument beside the Jordan, and he called parents to remember to tell their children what God had done in the past. This Friday, as a school we’ll attend another memorial in Aylmer. Setting the scene, at our chapel today we connected Remembrance Day, and an experience with war completely foreign to our students, with the behaviours we all know on our playground. We can choose to help others and to speak with grace, or we can choose to insist on our own way, to use words harshly, or grab and take what we want. The choices we make as individuals, and as a whole country, have consequences for good or for evil. We “remember” by calling to mind a past that we’ve not experienced, so that we can make wise choices for the future. We recognize God’s work in the past to encourage us to make the hard choices and do the right things today. As Christians, we “remember” God's spirit is with us now and in the future too. You are welcome to join gr 1-8 classes as they walk to the Aylmer cenotaph and join the ceremony - let us know if you can help! Parents, please send some change for poppies. We depart ICS by foot at 10:15. Dress warmly and appropriately - we go rain, shine or cold!
