From the Principal’s Desk:
“Let’s connect” says our sign, referring to our parent conferences tonight and next Monday. Our model of Christian education is one of partnership with parents, not of an organization or government deciding what is best. To make that model work well, we feel that is is very important for parents to be in conference with teachers, seeing for themselves what their child is up to, and encouraging their teacher in their work. Ideally, the priority for this should be higher than that of attending a sports event for your child. Both are part of growing in mind, body and spirit. I think of the educational application of Hebrews 10:24,25, “let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another.” Parents, we invest heavily in our work with your children, we care for them and we look forward to meeting with you!
OACS School Quality Assurance Program (SQAP) survey. We need 100% staff and board participation, as well as 50% of our parents. A reminder email is out, and your thoughtful consideration is much appreciated.
Yours in Christian education, Keith Cameron, Principal and Chief Operating Officer
Protectors @ Home: This week, we looked at how we can be (or at least appear) strong and courageous in the face of mistreatment. How we carry ourselves, speak and act all display either a confidence which protects us and others or a timidity that others may use against us. Joshua is called by God to “be strong and courageous,” and part of that is an outer appearance that reflects our confidence in who God has made us to be. Thanks to our grade 4/5 demonstrations! Let’s display confidence in our God who calls us to act justly.
Each week, during staff devotions we join in prayer for our parents and staff members. We invite you to do so as well.
Praying for our parents: Frank & Rose Fehr and Neil & Laura Fehr
Praying for our staff: Please pray for our Resource & French teacher Ms. Karista Smeets.
Congratulations to Nathan and Val Bokma, Cameron and Thomas on the birth of Lynelle Shirley on October 12th weighing in at 7lbs. 7oz.

Parent/Teacher Interviews: Are scheduled for tonight Oct 18th & Oct 23rd. The Fall conferences are considered mandatory for all families. Last minute, no time to go through Sycamore? Please call the office and we can schedule that in!

Playground Improvements. We have received Harry the Hippo and Calvin the Caterpillar as part of our Aylmer Area Community Foundation grant. We just need some maint ctte members or volunteers with some time to complete the footing work, hopefully over the next few weeks!

Family Fun Night. Our October Family Fun Night is postponed. Chantelle, our board rep for our new Community Care Committee wants to start these events off on a strong note, and neither scheduling nor volunteers were looking promising this time. Our first FFFN will be Friday 1 November. We are thinking of a “class parents lead” for each event, where the parents of a particular class would work together to prep, cook, serve and wash up. If you have children in multiple classes, there would be multiple opportunities to build community with the other parents of your children’s classmates. The Com Care Committee would help with a “chief chef” to help with menu planning and do food purchases. What do you think? Anyone up to be a part of the first “class lead”?

Bible Studies: Students are investigating the development of writing in the ancient world. We examined pictographs, (early writing through the use of pictures) first developed in Mesopotamia. Understanding pictographs was hard because everyone drew the pictures differently. We tried our hand at making some pictographs and shared  them with fellow classmates.
Next, we’re going to look at how the Egyptians improved on this early form of writing, and how the Mesopotamians improved on it again with cuneiform (making wedge shapes on clay tablets with a reed). Later on, the Israelites used the Hebrew alphabet to write down the books of the Old Testament, which we are learning in order for Memory Work.
God used Moses and various scribes to write the Old Testament. They were used by God to record his inspired Word. We’re pretty amazed with how long it took (about 1,400 years) from the time the writing of the Bible began until it was finished!
Wed. Oct. 18 - Memory Work: We are continuing to memorize the  books of the Bible in their order.
Poetry (Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs) and Prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos).
