Mission:  The mission of Immanuel Christian School is to prepare students to meet the challenge of the world and culture they live in as young and growing Christians.  Thus, students are taught the skill of discernment in the light of God’s Word, the practice of stewardship for creation, the required commitment to a life of Christian service, and the beauty of witness through modeling God’s love in a broken world.

From the Principal's Desk:

It was a distinct pleasure to welcome so many grandparents and senior friends into the school on Monday!  We had about 110 people join us in class visits, for lunch and for class presentations in the afternoon.  Thank-you to all who helped make this day a success, including our classroom, kitchen and yard duty volunteers, as well as those on our Ladies' Auxiliary and Promotions Committee!

I asked grandparents to share memories such as the most memorable world event (the Second World War, JFK's assassination and the World Trade Centre attacks were prominent), as well as their own school experiences (many liked Math and English, walked several miles to school, uphill both ways, or course!).  However, what was most interesting was the advice many wished to pass on to our current students: follow God, don't give up, enjoy life, be kind, loving, considerate, know that Jesus is with you.  These are our Graduate Expectations phrased differently, and from a well-respected source.  It is our joy and challenge at ICS to shape children's characters towards God, and to do so in concert with church and home, including all generations.

On another note, I'm looking forward to three days away with our gr. 7/8 class as we head up to Fair Glen Camp for the class retreat. I will describe highlights of our time in next week's Journal.

in Christ,
//Keith Cameron//

Praying for Our Families at staff devotions this morning:  Mike & Wendy Abell, Larry & Irene Buis,                                                                                                                    Keith & Amanda Cameron, Kelly & Theressa DeJong

Update on the Drive Total:  As of May 15, the new drive total is $71,315!!  We have exceeded our drive goal of $70,000.  Praise God from whom all blessing flow.
Reminder: Bus transportation for the rest of the week will be as normal since we are not taking a bus to Fair Glen this year.
Yogurt Containers:  send in what you have.  Our deadline for the program is Tuesday, May 29th.  No more after that.

T.R.I.P.:  Our supplier has informed us that there are no more $5 and $10 Sobeys paper certificates available anymore.

School Athletics T-Shirt will be offered for sale again.  Orders are due on Thursday, May 31st to have them available before the end of school.  Promoting team building and school pride, our intent is to have all students from gr. 1 – 8 have these as mandatory, short sleeve shirts for gym class in Fall 2012.  If you place your order now you still have the opportunity to have your name printed on the back.  If you purchase in August before school starts then you will not have that option.  At that time we will have a variety of sizes available and sell them to the students as needed.  See last week’s Journal for an order form. A sample of the red t-shirt and a black hoodie are on display in the office.

Volunteer opportunity for next year:   We are looking for someone to take over the monthly cheese order fundraiser.  It includes putting notes in the journal, collecting the orders from the office, ordering cheese from our supplier, and sorting once a month. (Cheese is delivered the first Wednesday of every month.)  You would not have to take care of collecting money.  Please talk to Nancy Robinson or Emily Schuurman (schuur7@execulink.com) if you are interested.  We'd be happy to work along side you for a while too!

2012 ICS GOLF TOURNAMENT:    Thank you for all the golfers that have registered for the Golf Tournament this weekend.  We have 26 teams registered!!!  Remember, for those of you who are participating - there will be a Shotgun Start at 1:00 p.m. sharp.  Try to arrive at the course a little early so that we can have you ready to tee off.  PLEASE ALSO REMEMBER THAT LUNCH IS INCLUDED IN YOUR ENTRY FEE.  For those who are attending for dinner only, aim for 6:00 p.m.  See you all on Saturday!!!!!!  Should you have any questions, contact one of our Committee Members - Harry Knibbe, Tracy Mantel, Dean Mantel, Ken Vandendool, Lisa Vankemenade, Jeff Vannoord, Tammie Vannoord, and Harley Zylstra.

Track and Field:  Wednesday, May 23.  Thank you to all those who have offered to help us out so far with our Track and Field Day events and activities!  We are preparing our volunteer list, making contacts and confirmations via phone.  We welcome the help of ICS Alumni as well.  Parents, we will try to accommodate your assistance at one or more of the events where your children are scheduled to participate.  If you wish to still volunteer please send an e-mail to the school as soon as possible.
Note:  All our volunteers will get free lunch tickets (1 hot dog, 1 drink, and 1 freezie).  Volunteers may purchase extra items also.  As soon as we have our volunteer list finalized, it will be sent home with your child.                              Thank you, Ms. Pieters, Ms. Buma

From the Library:  There was much excitement in school last week for Book Week!
Students were involved in book related activities all week at school, and many participated in Library Tic-Tac-Toe.  Winners of this contest were Caleb Poortinga (K-Gr.2), Michael Drop (Gr. 3-5) and Tyler Kaastra (Gr.6-8).   Mrs. Anna Krahn, David Schuurman and Jocelyn Shelton were the winners of the Usborne Books draw.  Congratulations to all our winners!
One of the Library-based activities was for students to vote for their favourite title/author/series. They could choose any author they wanted, not only those whose books are found in our library.  The results tallied by division were Primary (K-2) – a tie for Robert Munsch and Eric Carle. Junior (3-5) – Soul Surfer by Bethany Hamilton, and Intermediate (6-8) The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.  In previous years the voting was much closer.  This year there was a great variety in the books chosen.  It's interesting to see what students are reading and which books and authors impact them enough to be listed as “Favourites”.
A big Thank-you to those who helped make our book sales run so efficiently – Mrs. Vyn (Living Books) and Mrs. Lendvay (Usborne Books).  Proceeds from the book sales allowed us to choose about $300 worth of books for the Library!!  Thank you for your support!
The main point of having Book Week is to instil an enjoyment of reading in our students.  We hope you continue to celebrate reading and have fun with books at home and in school.

Used Book Sale:  For the past few months, I have been "weeding" our library shelves by removing books that are old, duplicate copies, in bad shape, not being read, out-of-date, etc.  These items are now available for purchase in our Used Book Sale on the cart outside of the Library.  The price is right - just 25 cents each.  Feel free to browse and take home favourites you may come across.  The honour system is in place - use the container on the cart.
