From
the Principal's Desk:
As
time allows, it is often well worth it to dig back in our files and see what we
have done before for many of our well-run, established events, taking advantage
of our rich history! Last year, Mrs Nancy Robinson expressed the reasons
behind our annual Grandparents and Senior Friends Day, on Monday May 14
this year. It is well worth printing again this year:
Next Monday,
May 14, we are celebrating Grandparents’ and Senior Friends’ Day!
This is a very special day here at school.
During our regular open hose, teachers try to teach typical lessons, keeping in
mind the distractions of people coming into the classroom. During
Grandparents’ Day, the lessons may be much more student self-directed
activities, because there tends to be a lot more visiting going on.
Children are excited to see their special guests, and teachers celebrate the
joy shown between the 2 generations. The unconditional love and
acceptance they bring is a treasure from our seniors.
All of the students were given invitations to pass
on to their grandparents. If your children have no grandparents coming to
visit, please encourage them invite a special neighbour or person from your
church. Having someone there to specifically visit them is really
important to the children. Even the older students keep an eye on the
door to see who is coming into the room. If there is a special
circumstance, let us know. There are usually some visitors who will spend
a bit of time with children who need a little attention. If they are
aware of a need, teachers will make every effort to have every child
included. Also, our senior friends should not wait for an invitation from
a specific child. You are welcome
to join us for the day!
Psalm 78 does such a beautiful job of expressing the role of Christian education in the lives of our families. God’s teachings are passed on from generation to generation. His praiseworthy deeds are celebrated, and children are taught so “they in turn would tell their children”. As we celebrate Grandparents’ and Senior Friends’ Day, we are also celebrating what God has done in our lives as well as look forward to His work in the lives of generations to come.

Congratulations: On
Saturday, May 5 The Royal Canadian Legion held its final Public Speaking
competition for the entire province of Ontario .
There were four competitors for each of the four levels: Primary, Junior,
Intermediate, and Senior. Each of these competitors
like, Megan Friesen, had placed first at his/her Branch, Zone, District, and
Area competitions. And now here they all
were from all over the province coming together for the final competition held
in Niagara Falls .
It was a beautiful day watching and
listening to these young people speak so well.
We like to congratulate Megan, the youngest competitor there, upon
receiving the third runner-up award for Storytelling. The Legion commented that
they had approximately 10,000 students participate in the Ontario Command
Public Speaking program this year. We
thank the Lord for blessing Megan in her public speaking abilities.

Bill 13
We
at the OACS office have been following the development and progress of Bill 13
which was introduced by the Liberal government to address the issue of bullying
in Ontario
schools. Since this bill, if it is passed, could have some impact on our
schools, perhaps particularly our high schools, we encourage you to become
familiar with the content of the bill which you can find at http://ontla.on.ca/web/bills/bills_detail.do?locale=en&Intranet=&BillID=2549.
At
present, the bill has passed second reading with relatively little debate in
the legislature. You will likely have noted the growing debate in the media
where there is concern about the bill’s perhaps unintended consequences. We encourage
you to monitor media coverage of this bill.
There
are a number of aspects of the bill that are noteworthy and might possibly
impact OACS schools. Some examples:
- Boards will be
required to allow students to establish groups to promote gender equity,
anti-racism, respect for persons with disabilities, and respect for
persons of all gender identities and sexual orientations.
- If a Board wants to
rent its facilities to groups outside the school, it must ensure that such
groups have policies that are in compliance with the intent of Bill 13.
- Schools are expected
to conduct surveys of students every two years to gather information about
student attitudes and orientations, and then use the information in those
surveys to shape policies and programs.
There
is, of course, some question about whether this legislation will be passed in
its current form, and whether it will apply to our schools if it does pass.
There can be little doubt, however, that this debate will impact the public
perception of what schools ought to do about bullying and how schools ought to
respond to student concerns about the issues raised in the bill. For that
reason it is important that we pay attention to this issue and perhaps begin
conversations in our communities about the growing public awareness about
bullying and its impact on students. Source: OACA InSight (http://www.ecurriculum.ca/2012/03/bill-13/)
[Principal's comment]:
Rather than focusing on our common value as people made in God's image, this
Bill focuses on promoting all lifestyle choices as equally valid.
Private Christian school
parents need to be concerned about Bill 13. In response to this problem, please
consider 4 things.
1. PRAY for
wisdom and God’s hand to work in the hearts and minds of our politicians
2. Contact
your MPP and request they amend or vote NO to Bill 13.
3. Sign a
petition either online or by mail in (http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/vote-no-to-bill-13.html).
4. Learn
about this issue and educate those around you. Don’t let bill 13 slide by!
