DUTCH DELITE NITE - April 19 5-7:30pm
From the
Principal's Desk:
Over
the last week, I have been at two very different, and very good, school events.
One week ago, I attended the Battle
for the Books competition in Strathroy where our junior and senior teams
both acquitted themselves very well (congrats on the runner-up
banner, junior team!). The competition was less familiar to me, involving
studying 10 selected novels and responding to testing questions. Yesterday, I
joined the grades 5 - 8 classes at the LDCSS drama production, Flowers for
Algernon, a lengthy, striking play asking questions about what it means to
be human, and whether attempting to "fix" somebody is a help or a
harm. It was very well acted, with numerous ICS graduates in the cast and
supporting roles.
For
me, both events displayed the breadth of the educational program in our OACS
family of schools (including ICS and LDCSS). We are a small school, but we
maintain that one of our distinctives is the quality of program,
and there is such a breath of opportunity (sports to academic competitions to
music to drama) in our curricular and co-curricular programs! Critically, we do
not see our co-curricular programs as "extra." A student has
choice whether to participate, and in which ones, but we believe that those
choices form a large part of an excellent program. Maintaining a
"Christian, innovative and excellent" educational program, and
clearly communicating what an "innovative, excellent" program is
are challenges, though, especially as we seek to reach Christian parents who
are more skeptical of the cost and are perhaps even unfamiliar with
Christian schooling. We'll be discussing that challenge at the Spring
membership meeting tonight - your voice and thoughts are needed, come on out!
yours
in Christian service,
Keith
Cameron

on Saturday, Apr. 6. Megan’s story was

Ward. Congratulations, Megan!
Our Junior team knew their book
information well and were rewarded with a second place finish. Be sure to
check out our Runner-up banner in the front hall!
Our Senior team played extremely well
but were up against some tough competition, so they did not place. The
top 4 finishes were within 25 points of each other, which is close when a
possible score is 810!
Congratulations to both teams on a
great showing! You played well and worked together as a team. I was proud
of you. I hope to see most of you out again next year!
A special THANK-YOU to Mrs. Sherry
DeKraker who drove a group of students to Strathroy and acted as Senior coach
for the day. Also, over the winter, she prepared questions for a number
of books to help with our practises (and even volunteered to help again next
year!). This was greatly appreciated! We couldn't have done it without
you! (Anyone interested in helping over the summer/fall, just contact Mrs.
Robinson)
