We
began our school chapel this morning with a moment in reflection and prayer
following the tragic bombings at the Boston Marathon. The grade 1/2 class was
focusing on Daniel, which has much to say about God's sovereign hand in the
affairs of the world's nations. In chapter 2: 20, 22, Daniel acknowledges
God's control as he prays,
"Praise be to the name
of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his....
He reveals deep and hidden
things; he knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with
him."
God
is aware of all that goes on in our world, and we rest secure knowing that
light dwells with Him and will not be put out. In that spirit, we prayed
for those present at, and affected by, the events in Boston .
We are very pleased to welcome back, Mr
TenBruggencate! Evert was able to return to the classroom at 25%, and while he
still has much rehab before him, we praise God for the healing of Evert's knee
injury to date, and for being Evert's strength and endurance
in affliction. This was a very serious injury, and to allow for physio and
rehab, Evert's partial resumption of teaching duties may stay at 25% until Fall
2013.
Did you know that ICS is in partnership with the London area Christian
schools in a Foundation which seeks to provide annual income to our school?
Mrs. Anne VandenBrink and I attended the Foundation's annual meeting in London last month.
The Foundation has little prominence here at ICS, but it is a means to
build for 20-30 years into the future, mainly through will bequests. The
Foundation is in a formal partnership with Christian Stewardship Services (CSS)
which assists Christians with planning their personal estates, setting up wills
along with retirement and charitable giving. Do you have a will?
Do your parents? Are you aware of the positive financial considerations
of including a bequest to a Christian cause, such as ICS?
For more information, please see Anne VandenBrink or myself,
or visit the CSS website at www.csservices.ca. A CSS representative will
come to your house for free to assist you with all their services.
Yours
in Christian service,
Keith
Cameron
Praying
for our Families:
Last week we prayed for Dave & Charlene Van Gurp and Jeff &
Tammie Vannoord.
Praying
for our Staff: This
week we will pray for Mrs. Drop and Mr. TenBruggencate.
Building
Access: We have recently had some issues with unsupervised
access to the school in the gym and senior wing classrooms. Classes have
been accessed, mud has been tracked in halls, minor items have been damaged
(markers, stickers, etc), but nothing has been broken into or stolen. Most seriously, exterior doors have been left
open. Our most recent incident appears to have been on Sunday Apr 14. It looks like those in the building have keys,
and are perhaps children. IF you are a
key holder, please be aware of your shared responsibility for our building care
and security. Should you have any
further information on this issue, please speak with Mr. Cameron.
Science Fair: The Tenth Biennial Ontario Christian Schools
Science Fair was sadly cancelled last Friday! Due to a storm in the area,
both water and power were unavailable at Redeemer University
College on Fri Apr 12,
which has led to the cancellation. Our 4 students and Ms
Jones traveled there safely only to have to return! We are
thankful for travelling mercies, but we were all disappointed. Happily,
the fair may be rescheduled for 16-17 May - watch this space next week! Our
students are to be congratulated for their hard work - regardless of the
science fair, they were able to play with some interesting scientific
"problems", responding with in-depth, insightful projects. Well done
to Matthew Cameron, Jordan Hiemstra, Sebastian Noorland and Megan Ypma.
Christian Education Week: In early May, we join
in worship with participating churches with ICS students amongst the
congregation, with the aim of highlighting Christian schooling. We aim to join
in Sunday worship services, with choir, band and leadership representation. We
also hold a school chapel and open house. The theme is: “You, like living
stones, are being built into a spiritual house.” I Peter 2:5a. This
year, Sunday plans include:
- ICS choir & worship team – 2
songs as a presentation
- Primary and Senior Student: leads
in responsive reading.
- Principal: 5 min - links Christian
Ed week theme verse with the work at ICS.
- Band: after reading or for
offertory following sermon at ACRC.
- School display board and laptop
with pictures in foyer

We would seek your
support for your child to be involved in the various activities. Please return
the confirmation form sent home today by Tue Apr 23.
Close-to-home "field trips": We
have arranged a number of short field trips, taking advantage of free events in
our local area. For a school that has not done many curriculum-tied
short trips, this is exciting. We need parental help to give us the adult :
student supervisory ratios (generally 1 : 5 or 1 : 8 unless we travel to
another school) we need to safely travel off school grounds. If you can support
your child's education in this way, please volunteer! Trips are:
1. Community Clean-Up: ICS is participating
in Pitch-In Canada Week on Fri Apr 26th from 1:30 - 3 pm. Demonstrating our
stewardship of our grounds and the local parks, as well as our love for our
community, we will sweep them for garbage left over from the winter. Grades 5-8
will cover parks in the town centre, Grade 3/4 will cover Lions Park
to our south, Grade 1/2 will cover the church and Caverly Rd sidewalks, and SK will cover
our sports fields. We are seeking 2 parent volunteers from each class
to assist with supervision - can you help out? Please send a note in with your
child if you can!
2. Grade 5/6 Racing Against Drugs: an
OPP-sponsored student interactive contest with an anti-drug theme held in
Belmont Arena on Monday, Apr. 29 from 12:15 - 2:15 pm. 2 parents requested!
3. Faith
Christian Academy
production of Beauty and the Beast in St
Thomas on Tue Apr 30 at 1pm, grades 1 through 8 will
attend.. One parent volunteer for each class is requested!
Reminders: Dutch Delite Nite! This month’s Friday
Family Fun Night is full of traditional dutch dishes - suitable for anyone with
an appetite! Snert, Boerenkool Stamppot, Appelmoes + Rijsterbrij which
translates to Pea Soup, Kale Hash, Applesauce and Rice Pudding! Treat your family to a warm hearty dinner on
Friday, April 19 from 5pm-7:30pm in the school gym. Cost is Adults $8
and Children (12 + under) $5 and all proceeds go directly back into the school!
Delivery to Heritage Place
and Takeout is also available. So dig out your Klompen (wooden
shoes) and see you there!
Spring
Drive: It’s
time for our annual fundraising drive.
Your drive letter was sent out last week. A canvasser will be contacting you the week of
April 22-26. Please
have your envelope ready when your canvasser comes to pick it up. We thank you for being part of our school
community and for your continued support of Christian Education.
Cheese: The May order is attached – orders are due
Wed., April 24th with delivery on Wed. May 1st.
Pause for Play: Turn-off-the-Screens Week
April 21-27: The goal is to increase the amount of physical
activity while reducing the amount off time spend in front of the screens. We know it is difficult to be 100% screen
free, but we need to learn how to balance our screen time (inactivity) with
activity. In order for children to stay
healthy children need to be active at least 60 minutes a day!
Each
child was sent home with their own Events Calendar and a Log Sheet. Your log sheet is your ticket to the event so
take your log sheet with you. The only
event you will need tickets for is the Dodgeball Mania to be held here at ICS
on Thursday, 25th. Grade 1-3
from 6-6:45 and Grades 4-8 from 6:45-7:45.
Tickets are available at the school, Complex and the Library but there
is a limited number so send a note or e-mail if you wish to order tickets. First come-first served. Log
sheets are to be returned to your teacher by April 30th.
Jr
Basketball Tournament
- Tue Apr 23rd. Our district jr basketball tournament will be held next
Tue at LDCSS in London .
Devotions are at 10:40. Games are from 11am - 6pm (depending on
placement). Players should bring lunch, good snacks, and some money for
the concession, if desired. Coaches will coordinate transport, all

to thank all those that purchased items from the Living Books table during Grandparents/Senior
Friends Day at Immanuel
Christian School .
With your generosity, Nancy Robinson was able to choose $181.40 worth of
reading material for the school library. Hoping all the children will
look forward to reading the new books as they become available on the library
shelves.
