Family Fun Night
On Sept 28 Clovermead has opened its doors from
4 p.m. to dark to our school community and all proceeds going to the school. We
need your help to advertise and promote this to surrounding churches and
schools. We are promoting it as "Christian family fun". The entry
cost will be $10 dollars which will include park entry, hotdog and a pop. More
food can be purchased. There is fun for all ages from art gallery, jumping
pillow to buildings and displays for history buffs. It will be a good evening
of fellowship and fun.
From the
Principal's Desk:
It
has been a great first week back, and I trust that your children are also
telling you that! Our Back to School BBQ on Friday was well-attended, and
included many parents, grandparents and high school students. It was very good
to re-connect as a community brought together by our passion for Christian
learning. Many thanks to the Ladies Auxiliary for the delicious food, to
Promotions Committee for helping out with many details, and to Education
Committee for hosting the parent briefs.
Many
of our parents and grandparents will realize that today marks the 12th
anniversary of the World Trade Centre terrorist attacks in New York City in 2001. Like many significant
events, we may remember exactly where we were when we heard of it. In my case,
I clearly remember my unit Commanding Officer quoting from Matthew,
"blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God"
(5:9), and stating that as Canadian solders, we were sure to become involved in
some way. Two years later, I was serving in Kabul , Afghanistan
as part of the International Security Assistance Force! As a Christian school,
we also call our students to make peace, sometimes by bold actions to stand
alongside those being wrongly treated. In chapel this morning, we reaffirmed
that we continue in our Protectors program. The program teaches our
students how to rightly defend themselves and others, and to move from being
Bystanders to Alongside Standers. It will be taught in chapels and in classroom
devotions, and worked on throughout the school year.

Christian education, Mr Keith Cameron, Principal
Welcome back to the Klassen
Family
(Darrell and Helen, Seth, gr 5; Devon, gr 3; and Jedidiah, gr 1, Liberty , newborn) as they
rejoin us for the Fall term! Please keep
the family in your prayers as Helen remains ill in hospital in London .
We need at least one more
adult reading buddy!
Do you have 30 min in the morning once weekly to read with a grade 1-5 student?
The gain in confidence and skills for a routine interaction like this is huge!
Plus, you get to enjoy stories! Please speak to Mr Cameron.
Delinquents in our new
playground!
Recently, our tetherball pole has twice been pulled out of its concrete base
over the course of a weekend. Our maint committee will be asked to consider
video surveillance options. Anyone near the school after hours is asked to keep
an eye on our rear playground area, and report suspicious activity.
Student service
"jobs":
All gr 5-8 students will be allowed and expected to help out in various ways in
the running of their school. These service jobs include worship team, tech
team, junior maintenance, reading buddies, recycling, flag duty and more! These
are valuable opportunities to grow in character as laid out in our Graduate
Expectations!
Personalized learning: For grades 1-8, you should
have received information about your child's Accelerated Reader and Mathletics
accounts. These help students develop at their best level in reading and math,
and both can be accessed from home (AR to see progress, math to complete assignments
or compete with other students around the world). You can help your child by
cultivating a joy of reading, and encouraging math play.

Library News:
Welcome back to school! We have had our first Library class
and students were able to check out materials.
Some reminders:
- all materials are on a 2 week loan;
renewals are allowed if there is not a waiting list
- students are encouraged to put books
in a bag when they leave the library. It's a good idea to also return
them in a bag - just an
extra bit of protection from dirt and drink spills
- find a place at home to store library
books so they are safe from younger siblings and pets, and easy to find on
library day
Remember that you can search
www.arbookfind.com to find out if there are AR quizzes available for books your
child is reading from home or another library.
Ride for Refuge: Ride with us October 5th
in the Ride for Refuge, a fantastically fun, family-friendly bike-a-thon that
supports 175+ charities who serve the displaced, vulnerable, and exploited

funds raised by our teams. We use the funds exclusively to support our
Compassion sponsor child and our Tuition Assistance Fund as a way of helping
out others.
The
Ride is in north London this year, starting at North Park Baptist Church .
We have confirmed that the 12 km route is on residential roads or parks, and is
very suitable for children. Grades 5-8 students are invited to fundraise or
simply register ($25 fee applies) with the ICS team. Sign up online at http://rideforrefuge.org/home and
register with "Immanuel Christian School Team." Please indicate that
you are riding for the charity "Immanuel
Christian School ."
As a parent, you are welcome to
participate with younger children under your supervision. If your grade 5-8

Tissue Box: Thank-you to all those who
have added a tissue box to our classroom supply.
Accelerated Reader Program: Grades 1/2 students have
been given what level books he/she may read from our school library. Please
encourage your child to read their A.R. books each week and do the quizzes on
the computer. It is good to have your child practice reading out loud at home
to help them with their fluency and comprehension. The goal for students in
Grades 1/2 is to read and do A.R. quizzes weekly. All the grade one students
took home books for the A.R. program marked with a pink happy face sticker on
the spine of the books. Here is how you can help your child begin this program:
first look at the pictures and ask your child what the book may be about, next
read the book to your child, then read the book aloud pointing to the words and
having your child read along with you and finally have your child try to read
it to you. This process should be done over several days so your child will
start to recognize the words in the book. Check to see if your child has
comprehended what was read by asking them some questions about the story. Have
your child take the book to school with a note indicating that he/she is ready
to do an A.R. quiz on the book. The computer program will ask your child five
or ten comprehension questions about the book that was read. Parents please
call if you have any questions or come in after school some time to see how the
program works.
Creation Studies: In class the students have
been watching the monarch caterpillar eat and eat and grow bigger every day
until it was fully grown and time for it to hang like a “J” from the top of our
container. Next we witnessed a miracle happen in our classroom on Tuesday
during math class. We watched the monarch caterpillar wriggle out of it's skin
and turn into a beautiful chrysalis. We are now looking forward to witnessing
the birth of the monarch butterfly.
Chickadee Magazine: You may place your Chickadee
Magazine order online. Please note: I set up an account for our classroom
however I could only select one grade so if you are signing up online please
mark your child as being in grade 2 even if your child is in grade 1. November
9, 2013 is the due date to place an order. Thank you.

Creation Studies: Behold the
Works of God: The Trees of the Field, (OACS) is our first Science
unit this year. In this unit, the
students are examining the details of plant life through trees. They are being challenged to understand how
our Creator God designed trees for life, how they are grand garden gifts, and
how they reach out in praise. They will especially focus on how trees
demonstrate that they, too, with all creation, exist for the glory of God.
During the course of this unit, we hope to
explore a forest habitat and a wetland habitat.
Habitats provide living things, plants and animals and even us, with
what is needed to live: food, water,
air, space and light.
Field Trip: On Thursday,
