From the
Principal's Desk:
It was great to see our students back on Tuesday
and today (for the SK students)! We are excited for the upcoming school year.
Like all children, our students will still want to be having fun but will also
be excited to be back with their friends. As teachers, we are keen to make
learning at ICS engaging. Our focuses this year include:
- a culture of curiosity and exploration, hopefully
creating a "buzz" in the school;
- personalized learning programs in mathematics
(Mathletics) and literacy (Accelerated Reader);
- multi-age learning in Friday integrated study
sessions;
- an increasing emphasis on project-based learning;
- all building towards a strong identity as a
Christian learning community!
Let me encourage you to come on out for the Back to
School BBQ on Friday. We look forward to opening "phase 1" of our new
playground, our primary play structure, on Fri Sep 6 at 6pm. We gratefully
acknowledge funding from both the Aylmer Community Foundation and the ICS
membership. And, many thanks to the dedicated volunteers whose labour led to
success! New this year, Education Committee will host "what's new in
grade..." briefs, where the teachers will cover those things that have always
puzzled parents - AR? / homework? / story-telling? / health? Dessert will be
served right after the briefs.
For September 2013, we have an enrolment of 81
students. Mrs Ina Groeneweg teaches our JK/SK class, Ms Marianne Pieters
instructs gr 1/2, Mrs Sheryle Drop teaches gr 3/4 as well as music and French,
Ms Tine Buma teaches gr 5/6 with 3/4 rotary), while Mr Evert TenBruggencate and
Ms Katrina Jones instruct gr 7/8 and phys ed. We are very pleased to have Mr
TenBruggencate back teaching part-time, following his serious leg injury a year
ago when he was struck by a vehicle while cycling!
Visitors are always invited, and our "Welcome
Wednesdays" promote a culture of open classrooms. Come on in!
yours in Christ
Keith Cameron, Principal
Welcomes and Farewells: We are pleased to welcome John and Tina Hiebert,
with Victor (gr 3), Kahlen (gr 1) and Roenan (at home) to our community! Please introduce yourself and make them feel a
connection with our school. We also bid
a farewell to two families. Darrell and Helen Klassen, with Seth, Devon and Jedediah, are returning to homeschooling as was
their original intention. Congratulations to the Klassens on the birth of
Liberty Joy this summer. Please keep Helen
is your prayers as she is dealing with some serious health issues. If you wish
to help out please give the office a call.
We bid a farewell to Marcel and Amy Broer as well, as they transfer
Haley and Jaden to Summers
Corners Public
School . As
you cross paths, please let these families know that the ICS community extends
beyond just the classes, and that they are still welcome!

From the Finance Committee: If you have not
submitted your 2013/2014 tuition cheques, please do so by the end of this week.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Reminder: Everyone who comes
into the building should report to the office. Even if you are making a
quick stop-in visit with your child, please pop your head into the office, so
we know who is in the building. Volunteers working with student, please
remember to sign in at the office.
Transportation
Communication List: Please look it over carefully to see if your
phone #’s are correct and keep near your phone.
How does it work? If there is a
bus route disruption, the bus driver will call the families that have their
names stared and bolded. These families
in turn will call their block of people. Mr. Cameron will start the call for
walkers. Bus disruptions will also be
posted on the school Twitter feed on our web page. In case of illness or absence, if your child
will not be riding the bus in the morning, and it’s too late to call the
driver, please call the family before your pick up stop and their child can
relay the message to the bus driver. This may help to save on fuel costs.
Test of our Communications
List: We will test our transportation fan out list Friday
morning before 7 a.m. Expect a call!
Delays / Cancellations. Weather delays have in the
past been much more difficult for parents to deal with than have cancellations.
To that end, our policy aims to avoid bus delays. Our policy also considers
both student and staff safety in traveling to school in inclement weather. Snow creates potentially dangerous road
surface conditions, which impact both buses and teachers. Fog creates reduced visibility, which impacts
students getting on and off buses safely. Fog, while causing delays and
requiring slower speeds and increased attention, is not seen to create the same
driving risks as snow. In inclement weather situations, our delays or
cancellations will be guided by Thames Valley School Board (Aylmer area) decisions:
a) TVDSB snow cancellation = ICS bus cancellation,
ICS closed *
b) TVDSB snow delay = ICS bus cancellation,
ICS closed
c) TVDSB fog cancellation = ICS bus cancellation,
ICS closed
d) TVDSB fog delay = ICS AM bus cancellation, ICS open, PM buses run
normally
For now a phone call will also follow to
confirm this.
Items due: T.R.I.P.
Order: due 9 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday the 5th! (Your order form was included in your Back to
School mailing.) Pick up date is Thursday, Sept. 12 for this
month only.
What is TRIP? It is a
fundraiser where you can earn money towards your next year’s tuition, this
also includes families
who are 'graduated out of ICS and send to LDCSS. You can also continue with the
TRIP program your tuition credit will be applied to transportation costs to
LDCSS.
How does TRIP work? You purchase gift cards from the school of which 40%
of the profit goes towards reducing your tuition (or someone else’s), 50% goes
to ICS Fundraising and the last 10% goes to coordinators who administer the
program. These numbers are new to you all. The Canada
Revenue Agency through the OACS has informed us at the end of June that we can
no longer offer an 80% profit percentage to individual families. It has to be
50% or less depending on TRIP expenses. Even though ICS has very little TRIP
expenses, we have decided to lower the percentage to 40% so that we are covered
should
ICS be audited. The other 40% will be applied to the 'Fundraising budget'. We
realize this will be disappointing to you as individual families, but we need
to comply with CRA regulations. A good amount of 'TRIP credit' can still be
earned for individual families who diligently buy gift cards for all your
shopping needs. We will try to make the TRIP gift card program as convenient
for everyone as we can to help you attain a reduction to your tuition.
How do we get started? If you do not
have a TRIP number all you need to do is get a registration form from the
office and fill it out. You will be given a TRIP number that you use when
ordering. You can start buying cards the day you put in your registration form!
Where can I get the gift cards? Once a month a
TRIP order form will be attached to the Journal. you will need to return it
with your payment the next week, (The order is due the next week - the date is
printed on the form. The following week you will be able to pick up your gift
cards at the school or if you choose you may have them sent home from the
school with your child. You may still
buy gift cards at the school on Tuesday mornings, or on Fridays all day (only
when the school is open). Other locations include Clovermead Apiaries, and
our new location being Roszell’s Furnishings. These locations only carrying
Presidents Choice and Tim Horton’s gift cards. Family Flowers near St. Thomas carries a
wider variety of gift cards. You can also contact Theressa DeJong or Grace
Schipper.
This program is intended to give you
the opportunity to earn credit towards your tuition for the next year. We
encourage you to use this valuable resource.
Any questions please do not hesitate to
contact the coordinators. Grace Schipper 519-317- 1518 or Theressa De Jong
519-765-3372 or by email icstrip@live.ca

Playground Replacement :
We
would like to thank all those involved with the playground replacement,
especially those who came out for the grunt work.
The Building and Maintenance committee have worked on this project for two years, and finally can say we are close being completed, and even on time for the school year!!
Ray Kaastra was the first volunteer outside the B&M committee, and a crew from H Broer Equipment came out for the tear down of the playground. Neil Friesen Excavating and his crew did the excavation of the whole area and pulled out some interesting memorabilia with the posts. Chris & Christy Hiemstra and family covered the costs of moving out the old fill, which was a great help.
With the older playground disassembled and in pieces, it was a clean removal and this excited us for the new installation. This should be EASY with new technology and how most new assembly instructions are 3D modelled drawings with clear instructions. They even show normal people in the pictures putting the items together... with slacks and skirts even.
On the planned work day, early Saturday morning for a 7AM start, John Smit, Len & Jane Weverink, Abe Dyck, Jim Vording (and his girls) and a few other visitors who wore symbolic white hats and with clean hands, attended. We unpacked the massive crate with pry bars, Men with the glow of boy at Christmas, ready to see the awesome grand toy we got to put together as simple as a Lego set, one of my favourite pastimes. Boy were we surprised. There were no predrilled holes, no simple clamps, the drawings were descriptive with few pictures, little or no direction how to even start with the base. A few wooden heads were scratched and by about 11AM the posts and three platforms were standing proud. Problem was that the rest of the crate contents were these bags of small screws, odd brackets of multiple designs, clips, more brackets, and even less instruction. You can see these parts spread out nicely but man there was just no figuring this out. We all talked it over and anticipated multiple days' worth of work. We sucked up our pride, and to maintain our dignity we succumb to allowing the professionals. We called the supplier of the playground that Saturday and Elaine our rep arranged a great group of guys from Hoog Installations. They came in on Wednesday at 3:30pm and with great satisfaction they were done by 6pm. 2.5 hours. Wow. They must be wizards in LEGOLAND. Of course the group from the workday on the Saturday did all the major work of lining up the pipes and getting the platforms done for them... I guess it pays to have them do it sometimes, of course we had to pay them, so additional donations for that cost would be always accepted... :)
Now the grunt work had to happen, Keith arranged to have a load of wood chips brought in, and it was trucked in but needed to be leveled and moved around the playground. The sandbox had to be moved back into the play area under the shade trees. For this wonderful task Ryan Meesters, Ralph Vording, Eric Hartemink and John Smit were on staff to get it looking like a completely new area. Chris Bakker finished it off with a concrete curb with his finest craftsmanship. A further work crew composed of the entire DeJong and Cameron families, John Smit, Dean Mantel, Helen Friesen and Andy Kroondyk set up the tetherball pole, ball games, painted lines and climbers and drew out the large map.
We are still planning to add a few nice benches for our outdoor classrooms and to help define the playground area. Phase 2 (new swings and a pyramid climber) waits for next Spring.

joined our grade one class.
May
we together enjoy learning about God’s world.

of God: All Creatures Large and Small. We will investigate the awesome works of
God by taking a close-up look at the monarch butterflies and the sea creatures
with a focus on whales. We will explore how God continually makes sure that the
animals have enough food, a place to live, a way to reproduce, and a way to
protect themselves from enemies.
