May 6th 2015 Journal

Wednesday, May 6th, 2015

Mission:  The mission of Immanuel Christian School is to prepare students to meet the challenge of the world and culture they live in as young and growing Christians.  Thus, students are taught the skill of discernment in the light of God’s Word, the practice of stewardship for creation, the required commitment to a life of Christian service, and the beauty of witness through modeling God’s love in a broken world.

From the Principal’s Desk:
This is me… sort of! At the April 24th teachers’ District Professional Activity Day, we focused on

growth mindsets for learning – ours and our students. Walking in our students’ shoes, we used an exemplar (ourselves, reflected in a mirror) to draw a self-portrait. In small groups, we shared helpful critique: “I like…”, “I wonder if…”. And then, just like we do at any “real-life” task, we improved our work, moving to draft #2. So often in school, the task stops at the teacher marking. Do students have a chance to really improve after feedback? It’s also hard work to re-do a draft! Confession: I found it easier to ‘improve’ my sketch by adding a beard, but I was actually clean-shaven that day. The beard I’m sporting this week is my effort to see if reality can match my sketch! Being in the place of our students, doing something we’re not ‘naturally’ good at, and sharing our work with supportive colleagues – these are all ways we use a PA Day to help us improve as professional teachers!
As a teaching staff, we’ll reflect further on how a growth mindset might help us focus on fostering faith and Christian character… In the words of one of our teachers, let’s use a growth mindset “as we encourage our students to try their best and to use their own unique gifts and strengths to bring glory to God”?
in Christ, Keith Cameron

Original (1276 × 786)To all our faithful supporters of our paper recycling program: The buyer of our recycling paper program (Thermo-Comfort in St. Thomas) makes insulation from the paper we recycle. Due to the process they have to put the paper through, they can only accept newsprint paper. ie London Free Pree, Aylmer Express, Penny saver, Elgin County Market. They do not accept glossy flyers. Please do not put magazines, catalogues, telephone books, cereal boxes, junk mail, computer paper or brown paper shopping bags. Your town/or township will recycle that kind of paper. Thank-you for you cooperation in continuing with this great free fundraiser for our school!

Cycle of Hope (July 3-18):  How does one show thankfulness to God for His mercy and healing grace in a tangible way?  That was the motivating question that underpinned my decision to take two weeks this summer and ride 1600 kilometers (from Niagara Falls to Winnipeg) in support of a Christian charitable foundation, Habitat for Humanity, in its annual Cycle of Hope. Still suffering lingering physical and emotional effects from the cycling accident that nearly cost my left leg and my life, my older brother invited me to join him in a cause he has supported for many years. It was then I felt God’s leading to close this chapter of my life in a practical way.  I invite you to partner with me by supporting this adventure in prayer and with donations so I can fulfill my obligation of reaching $2500.  Thank you, Mr. TenBruggencate   http://www.habitat.mb.ca/events-cycleofhope.cfm

Science: Why are birds so amazing? Different birds can soar, glide, flap or hover.
Though soaring, gliding and hovering were not part of the activity, we did try flapping our arms for one minute in class! Some students “flapped” for two minutes before stopping. Our arms got very tired!
We don’t have a very large breast muscle. A bird’s breast muscle is the biggest muscle in its body!
We learned that a hummingbird can fly straight up, upside down, and backwards and an albatross can sleep while it flies! While the pelican weighs about 11 kilograms (25 pounds) its skeleton weighs just a little over half a kilogram (23 ounces)! God gave birds wings, feathers, bones, and muscles that are just right for flying. The next time you see a bird in flight, think about everything that goes into one flap of its wings!
Bird Projects: Most students are in the research stage of their project work, recording information about their specific bird. Remember to include facts and details about all of the Sub-Titles on your Project Content Outline, girls and boys. Parents, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Project due date is Friday, May 15.
Accelerated Reader: AR Reports were sent home with your child today. Goal due date is Fri. June 12.
Student of the Week: Our Student of the Week this week is Selena Kroondyk.
Next week: Jefferson Loewen.
Music: Students are working on playing pieces with boom whackers. We are currently working on a piece called “David and Goliath”.

GRADE 5 and 6 – Ms. Jones (k.jones@immanuelchristianschool.net)

Memory Work: For this Wednesday, and Thursday - 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
Next weeks memory work: Matthew 26: 57-63
Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome. The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’” Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” But Jesus remained silent.
