From the Principal’s Desk:
Welcome back after the Christmas break! With a fresh snowfall (and new snow piles in the playground!), it was great to see teachers and students back in our halls on Monday. We missed our JKs on our “snow day Tuesday”...  We are aiming for a calm start to learning, with an attitude of joy, grace and diligence in our work. Our board is engaged in “revisioning” for the coming school year and beyond - exciting stuff as we consider how we feel God leading us as a school community! As our mission declares, we aim to point towards Christ in our studies and as we grow as people of God. School work at ICS includes both our academic subjects and our co-curriculars: senior basketball teams resume training (tournament is on Tue Jan 31), Storytelling preparations begin in earnest (Speakfest is on Wed Feb 1), and electives start (on Fri Jan 27).  These are exciting elements of our educational program, and alongside our regular subjects, also play a large part in fostering Christian character! More details are below. Please also see the attached monthly calendar of events.
in Christian education, Keith Cameron, Principal and Chief Operating Officer
... Paper, Thank You, LettersA Very Big Thankyou to Everyone!  All of the staff, office personnel and bus drivers would like to thank everyone for their best wishes, treats, and gifts received throughout the Christmas season.  We truly appreciate all the kind gestures and thoughtfulness and goodwill.  The ICS Community is truly a blessing to be part of, and we greatly appreciate you!

Praying for our parents: Please join us as we pray for Abe & Leona Loewen and Bill & Sara Loewen.
Praying for our staff: Please pray for our Grade 3/4 teacher Ms. Buma.

REMINDERS:
Tuition Reduction Incentive Plan (T.R.I.P):  Order form attached, due on the 19th with pick up on the 26th.
Pizza Day: Will be held on Wed Jan 25th.  Order form is at end of the Journal, due Friday Jan. 20th. No late orders please.
School Bus, Bus, School, ...Transportation: Mrs. Debbie Atkinson is currently undergoing training to become a full time bus driver.  She will hopefully attain this on January 23rd. Once her training has been successfully completed Debbie will take over Mrs. Ann Walter’s route and Ann will take over Mr. Abe Miller’s route. We appreciate your flexibility in the meantime (an email with details was sent directly to parents on Sat Jan 7).

New Family Information Night: Our 2017 registration season has begun. The New Student/Family Information evening will be held on on Friday January 20th at 7:00pm. We feel strongly that many of our prospective parents are attending churches in our local area. If you know any families interested in ICS please invite them! Young children can visit with our Kindergarten teacher Mrs. Penner for a JK and SK program. Grade 1-5 children can enjoy an art/craft lesson. Grade 6-8 children are welcome to join their parents on the tour. Babysitting will be available for any preschool aged children.

Can you help? Our Breakfast program team is looking for two volunteers to assist with some food preparations. Helpers would be needed for Thursday mornings (8am-12pm approx) and duties would include baking, cutting, bagging and snack prep. Please let the office know if you can assist.

Untitled.pngSpeakfest / Public Speaking - parents and community members are invited to attend our Speakfest on Wednesday, February 1, beginning with a brief chapel at 9 am. Mark your calendars! Selected students will be able to move on to the Aylmer Legion Public Speaking on Saturday, February 4.

Electives - 5 Friday afternoons starting on Jan 27. Gr 4-8 students have been informed of selections. Some electives were over-subscribed (small engines and woodworking), requiring some students to be moved to second or third choices. All options are really attractive, and we trust that these “tastes” of skills and hobbies may prove to be the start of new interests for our students! This year we have: badminton, photography, personal grooming, firearms safety, woodworking, curling, baking, art attack, 3D printing, small engines, “Junior CSI”, and “The Voice”. Gr SK-2 will also have special mixed age classes, and gr 3 will complete the Red Cross Swim to Survive.

... Chess Set Clipart ...
Chess: Gr 3-8 are invited to sign up for the Chess team right after Christmas. Practices will start on January 16th from 12:05 -12:55 pm.

AW2Remember.jpgThe countdown is ON ... only 17 days left! We are in the last few weeks of planning for our big event and there are lots of things to get organized.  Our ‘To Do’ list is ever increasing and our volunteers are working hard to accomplish the tasks ahead of us.  If you haven’t RSVP’d yet, please do so either on our wedding website, or call the school office to reserve your tickets!  Your timely response will help our committee stay organized and work efficiently!  Please stay in touch as we post more information on our Facebook page! RSVP to the ICS school office or check out our RSVP page – www.wedding2remember.wordpress.com.

Still needing some GIFTS hours? We have new volunteer opportunities for A WEDDING TO REMEMBER: Check out the new positions available at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0948a9a72fabf49-volunteer

From the Library: We have a project in mind and would love to have your EMPTY chocolate boxes. The Delecto or Pecan Clusters (i.e. fake Turtles) from Walmart seem ideal, but similar sizes should also work. After you finish your chocolates, rather than throw the boxes into the recycling or garbage, send them to school.

    GRADE 7 and 8 – Mr. Bierman (p.bierman@immanuelchristianschool.net)
Welcome Back!  I trust all have enjoyed the time with friends and family, celebrating the Birth of our Saviour.  January begins a busy season for the class.  Students will be developing many different “soft-skills”, in particular long term planning and time management.  I look forward to seeing their finished products later in the term…
Chapel:  Next week the grade ⅞ class will present chapel.
Memory Work:  There will be no memory work during January.
Basketball:  The Bluewater Small Schools competition is on Tue 31 Jan at LDCSS. ICS is convening this competition. We run the concession stand with parent and student help, using the profits to underwrite the 7/8 class trip. Players will be asked to contribute baked goods, and non-players will be able to contribute or man the concession. Profits will be divided amongst students based on participation. We are looking for 1 parent to supervise the concession on the day. Can you help? Please let Mr Cameron know!
Speeches:  A document with a planning schedule was shared with the students before Christmas regarding the annual Speechfest requirements. It is also found on the class wiki page under Language Arts.  Most students have narrowed down their speech ideas.  Discuss with your child(ren) about their progress.  The ICS Speakfest is scheduled for February 1. Science:  Students have received a planning schedule and helpful information about Science Fair.  It can be found on the grade ⅞ wiki page.  Students should aim to complete the requirements for Section A on this resource within a week. Students are requested to submit their project proposal, project question, and permission form on Friday, January 13.
Note: The steps of the Scientific Method and skills for the projects will be taught in school, however, the majority of the project will be completed by the student on their own time.  This is a significant project which requires plenty of time management, experimentation, organization and communication.  Please stress the importance and value of the development of these life-skills and their application in the real world.
