Mission:  The mission of Immanuel Christian School is to prepare students to meet the challenge of the world and culture they live in as young and growing Christians.  Thus, students are taught the skill of discernment in the light of God’s Word, the practice of stewardship for creation, the required commitment to a life of Christian service, and the beauty of witness through modeling God’s love in a broken world.

From the Principal's Desk:

The recent Christian Schools Canada conference in Cambridge last Thu and Fri was an excellent time to connect with other Christian leaders and to share our thoughts on Christian education.  It was affirming to hear talk on nurturing student 'flourishing', on assessing character, on use of technology - in all these areas, we at ICS are moving in similar directions as our colleagues nationally.  We also heard about the recent Cardus release of the Canadian data set regarding the effect of Christian education.  Similar to the US data, Canadian graduates of Christian schooling (elementary and high school), are statistically much more likely than their public school counterparts to be grounded in their faith and living it out as an adult.  We also identified areas of challenge in moving beyond a middling academic result (particularly in sciences), and ensuring that our good words matched our actual deeds.  Good news - Christian schools are seen to make a positive difference, to individual lives and to their communities!

You may or may not be aware that 2012 is a "CTBS Year."  The Canadian Test of Basic Skills is a standardized test used by our school, and others in the OACS to give us performance benchmarks: how do our students fare compared to the average student in OACS schools and across Canada in any school?  We have chosen CTBS over the Ontario Ministry of Education EQAO tests.  This is what is called a "norm-referenced" test, so a score of 50 means that one would fall exactly on the average.  Students are tested in the areas of Language Arts, Math and Science.  All students in grades 3 through 8 will write these tests, during the mornings over 15-19 Oct.  Parents, we would appreciate you making all efforts to schedule routine appointments in the afternoons only this week, otherwise catch-up becomes quite a task!  No standardized test truly reflects fully what your child has been taught, but we believe that we gain valuable insight in terms of both individual student performance, and school performance through the CTBS tests.  You will receive notice of your child's performance, as well as a brief on the school performance when results are available.  Questions: please feel free to ask!

in Christ,
//Mr Keith Cameron//

Thanksgiving Dinner:  What a great meal!  Many thanks to all who contributed to this much anticipated, much appreciated annual event.  Thanks in particular to all those who cooked the turkeys, contributed food items and worked in the kitchen. Special thanks to the Elgin Milk Producers for the donation of cartons of chocolate and white milk and to Mrs. Suzie Guenther for the yummy, homemade cookies.  It was also a treat to see our senior students helping to clean up afterwards!  Mrs. Smit, we appreciate all the work you put into organizing this!

Boys and Girls Soccer: Our senior boys' and girls' teams competed in Clinton yesterday, with fine weather and good spirits.  I continue to be impressed by our students mature and sportsmanlike conduct at all the meets I have attended - they encourage each other, and act responsibly on and off the field.  Our boys finished at the quarterfinals.  Our girls team progressed and placed second overall.  After a loss of only 1-0 to Strathroy, the girls received the Finalist Banner to hang in the school gym.  Way to go, girls!
Well done all!  As a team we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the parents who provided transportation and to all those who came out to offer their support and encouragement.  Many thanks to our staff reps, Ms Pieters and Mrs VanderHoek, and our coaches, Mr Eric Schuurman, and Mrs Helen Friesen!  We truly appreciate all the time and enthusiastic effort you spent sharing your skills and knowledge with the team.  God has blessed us through you.
