Mission:  The mission of Immanuel Christian School is to prepare students to meet the challenge of the world and culture they live in as young and growing Christians.  Thus, students are taught the skill of discernment in the light of God’s Word, the practice of stewardship for creation, the required commitment to a life of Christian service, and the beauty of witness through modeling God’s love in a broken world.

From the Principal's Desk::

We have recently become increasingly concerned with some of our students' behaviour at recess, especially lunchtime.  In summary, the issue is a continued trend of rough playground behaviour across the gr 3-8 students (especially the boys), which results in raised tempers, fiery spirits, intentional physical needling and last week, one instance of punches thrown.  As a staff, we share a collective responsibility for all our students.  We discussed the following additional measures to steer all our students in the right direction:
  • we will all refresh students on the playground rules on respect for each other.
  • acceptable touch on the playground will be "two-finger" touch for tag (eliminates rough-housing).
  • we will continue to use the wall as a cooling down positional adjustment as needed.
  • we will temporarily make the basketball court and soccer field available on a rotating basis to one class at a time.
  • we will conduct a one week of a "surge" on playground supervision with 2 teachers on duty from 1:10-1:25.
As stated in our playground rules, students are to treat each other respectfully. We avoid rough play and play fighting. Although these things often start out as fun, people get hurt and bigger problems develop. Similarly, tackling in games is not allowed. This prevents escalating problems. For our students, we remind them that, "You always have a choice in how you react to any situation. Remember your responsibility to not be a participant in poor behaviour or a bystander.  Be an Alongside-Stander."  At ICS, we take our responsibility to provide a safe environment for all students seriously. Perhaps Dr Seuss says it best in The Cat in the Hat: "It's fun to have fun, but you have to know how."  We aim to teach the "how," which keeps it fun!

in Christ,
//Keith Cameron//

Baked Goods:  A HUGE thank-you to all families who donated baked goods for the Sweets, Treats and Treasures Sale on Sat Nov 17th!  The sale raises funds for the Ladies Auxiliary, which funds many of our school special events (theatre trips, for example)!

Student fund: update on $ raised from chocolates...  A profit of approx $2,500 was raised this year, an increase of about $1,000 more than last year.  The student fund covers field trips, sports meets, electives and other special events.  We will be able to increase the field trip allotment this year - well done!

Newspapers:  If you have bundled newspaper ready for recycling please drop them off at Martin’s Lift Truck (old location, 48180 Talbot Line, west on Hwy 3, north side of the road just outside of Aylmer). There is a shed there for newspapers as well as a bin on the north side of the building for pop cans.  People have been dropping off big bundles at the school so we would appreciate it if you brought them there directly.  Thanks for being a part of this fundraising.

Christmas Program:  You are all invited to attend our upcoming Christmas program on Monday, December 17th at 1:30 for an         afternoon matinee or our evening performance on Wednesday, December 19th beginning at 7:00.  This year’s program is called “Greetings From The Heart”.  Come for a time of spoken word, drama, song and instrumentals as we hear the Christmas story being told through the eyes of children.  May we celebrate the birth of our Saviour and enjoy a time of bringing Glory to God.  Refreshments will be served after the program.

Our Service Projects for this Christmas Season:
Food Drive for the Corner Cupboard:  It’s the time of year again to drop off items on non-perishable food under the decorated Christmas tree in the front hall.  These items will be picked up by the Corner Cupboard and will be distributed to needy families at Christmas time.  So pick up a few extra items with your weekly groceries and send them to school with your child(ren).  Your contribution to the food drive is most appreciated by the Corner Cupboard here in Aylmer

Hat/Mittens/Socks for the Optimist Club:  Once again, a tree will be in the front lobby for us to bless the less fortunate in our community.  You may bring in new hats, mittens, or socks to put under the tree. The Optimist Club works together with the Corner Cupboard and appreciates our school being involved in this project as well. Thank you!

Volleyball:  This year, in the interests of better competition, the volleyball tournament has been expanded to include schools as far west as Windsor and Sarnia - we are calling it the Bluewater Volleyball Tournament.  This means that we compete in the small schools pool, against Sarnia, Wyoming, Wallaceburg, Stratford and St Thomas.  Players need to bring a snack and lunch.  Coaches will facilitate rides.
Our boys play at LDCSS (24 Braesyde Ave, London), starting at 8:30 (be there for 8, please!).  Drivers are Mrs Versteegen-Buis and Mr Cameron.
Our girls play at LCES (202 Clarke Rd, London) starting at 9:20 (be there for 8:50, please!).  Drivers will be confirmed with the team.
Finals for both are at 3:30.

Library News
1. Earlier this week, students received notes regarding books that are overdue or coming due tomorrow.  Please help them check due
date slips and return items they have finished.
2. A Berenstain Bears book about Missing Watermelon Money appeared in the library last week.  I'd be happy to add it to our
collection, but if it sounds like it belongs to your family it can be returned. Just let the school office or library know.
3. Elgin County Library has given us a set of library cards to use for online researches in the computer lab and library.  If you have not
already sent in your card number, you do not need to do so. HOWEVER, these cards may only be used at school, so
students/families should still have a public library card allowing them access to the resources we are learning about in class.

FROM THE CLASSROOMS:
Memory work:  We are moving on to the Dutch version of Silent Night.  We recognize that learning another language, especially by rote, may be challenging.  However, as part of our call to love our (global) neighbours, we are called to try and identify with them. Learning some language is helpful in that regard.  As well, the languages chosen speak to some of our roots as Canadians, and as immigrants.
Stille nacht, Heilige nacht,

Student of the Week:  This week’s Student of the Week is Micah Schuurman.  Next week:  Braden Vandersleen.
We all enjoyed our trip to the theatre last week!  Below, are some excerpts taken from Student Journals in Grades 3 and 4.
  • Today we went to the play.  It was The Elves and the Shoemaker.  It is a Brothers Grimm fairytale.  We saw the play in London at a theatre downtown. (Kaylynn)
  • I liked when they turned off the lights in the theatre!  (Randall)
  • I liked the part where the elves were working on the shoes.  (Megan)
  • I thought the set was cool where the shoes were hanging (Hayden)
  • My favourite characters were the elves.  (Braden)
  • The shoemaker was my favourite character because of his accent.  (Lucas)
  • It was about a couple that was poor. The shop was going to close down, but the elves came and taught the shoemaker. Then lots of customers came.  It was a pretty good play!  (Cody)
  • There were only 3 actors!  The play was changed to be a bit more modern.  At first the shoemaker didn’t have any customers. Then a girl came in and ordered some red boots.  (Holly)
  • My favourite part was when the elves made the big red boots.  (Ben)
  • I liked the part when the girl customer said, “Do you take debit?”  And the shoemaker said, “Are you asking if I’m in debt?”  (Jocelyn)
  • We learned that there are two or more kinds of puppets.  There are mouth puppets and there are body puppets. (Haley)
  • Have fun finding the Shoemaker’s Shop on Google Maps!  (Micah)
  • It was cool! (Daniel)
  • I liked the Christmas tree! (Seth)

To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God."  We will hold a class election campaign, vote and set up a student government later in December!
