February 4th Journal 2015

Wednesday, February 4th, 2015

Mission:  The mission of Immanuel Christian School is to prepare students to meet the challenge of the world and culture they live in as young and growing Christians.  Thus, students are taught the skill of discernment in the light of God’s Word, the practice of stewardship for creation, the required commitment to a life of Christian service, and the beauty of witness through modeling God’s love in a broken world.

From the Principal’s Desk:

We all have stories to tell, and because our stories are uniquely personal, they resonate with others. We can all resonate with praise to God for safety in the Sinkes’ escape from their house fire yesterday. Their grade 3 daughter Lily matter-of-factly related elements of their story to me as she sat in her class only hours later! In this difficult and shocking time, we can uphold them in prayer as we’ve listed below. How great it is that we have a Christian school where we acknowledge God in all the details, where we turn to Him in prayer, and where we are encouraged to help one another in Christian community!

I recently had another, much less dramatic, reason to be especially thankful for Christian education at ICS. My grade 1 daughter Rachel was brushing her teeth, when she reflected on her recent health class.
“Garbage in, garbage out, Ms Buma told us.” Rachel was intrigued by the physical aspects of food, healthy choices, digestion and the end result…! Then she reflected again. “You know, Ms Buma also said that our thoughts are like that too. Garbage thoughts in our heads, and garbage out of our mouths. We have to be careful to honour God with our thoughts.”
Wow! That simple conversation over teeth brushing re-affirmed for me the importance of Christian education - that’s why my children are at ICS! This is the time of year that prospective parents are looking for school options - please, tell your stories!

Praying for our families: Please join our staff as we pray for Fred & Carrie Rempel as well as Glenn & Jenepher Rollins.
Please keep Keith and Ellyn Sinke with Lily, Phoebe, Eve and Sawyer, in your prayers as they have had a house fire early Tuesday morning. While we give thanks that no one was injured in the fire, the family will need your prayers for comfort, and strength as they rebuild. They are staying with the VanGurps, and Ellyn will keep us informed so we can help as needed.
Please also support Darrell and Helen Klassen with Seth, Devon, Jedidiah and Liberty, as Helen remains hospitalized in St Thomas.
Praying for our staff: Please pray for Mrs. Vanderhoek.

Valentine heart
Valentines at ICS Friday February 13th!  Did you know that Valentinus was a priest in the second century AD? According to one story, he defied the order of the emperor and secretly married Christian couples. In jail, Valentine healed the jailer's blind daughter. On the day of his execution he left her a note that was signed “Your Valentine.”

We’d like to encourage our students who wish to give Valentines to classmates. We’d recommend cards, but not candy treats for the class - the fun day can get overwhelmed by candy and antics!  Let’s keep class treats for birthday celebrations, please...

As a fun addition, this year we’d like to make Friday February 13th Pancake Lunch Friday. We’ll move up our pancake lunch which also helps us start off our Lent season. Order forms are at the end of the Journal.  $2 per student includes pancakes and juice.  Can you give us an idea of how many pancakes your child would eat? They are an average size of about 5” or 13 cm. It’s still all you can eat pancakes, but this would give our ladies in the kitchen an approximate ideas on how many to prepare. Deadline to order with payment is Tuesday, February 10th .
